Why there are no Baby Boomers on the new Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation

There are 2 reasons why Gen X, Y & Z are centrestage on Nine reboot.

Wondering where the Baby Boomers went on the new-look Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation?

Same here.

Producer Peter Beck explained it to me, so I will endeavour to fill you in…

Firstly it was decided that 4 teams is just too darn busy for the show which, given the allocated time, does make some sense.

Secondly, the dynamic of having a young team was considered integral to the show.

But while Josh Thomas was happily a Gen Y in the original series, these have now aged enough to have Gen Z (“Zee” or “Zed” depending on which you prefer) nipping at their heels.

Thus, enter Laurence Boxhall.

So with each generation bumped up a level, Baby Boomers had to go. There is a consensus that host extraordinaire Shaun Micallef now represents Baby Boomers -although that depends on your definition of the term, he could also be Gen X.

Nine is repeating the premiere episode tonight at 9:50pm and Saturday at 7pm.

  1. I watched it three times. So refreshing to have such a simple, stupid, hilarious hour (well, forty-ish minutes) back on air.

And I don’t know if you can really say “The first episode was chaotic, they hadn’t rehearsed the show or even segments properly so there were all sorts of problems. It will get smoother.” with a straight face. The joy of this show was the ad-libbing and appalling structure. Or lack thereof.

    Gripping television (opens envelope).

  2. Of course the fact that Nine specifically targets 16-39s and 25-54s for advertising has nothing to do with them not being interested in Boomers. The first episode was chaotic, they hadn’t rehearsed the show or even segments properly so there were all sorts of problems. It will get smoother.

  3. “the dynamic of having a young team was considered integral to the show”. This obsession that these shows have with youth is just ridiculous. There are people out there that are over 60. They won’t break a hip during a challenge.

    1. Hi Dave, it was explained to me as being more about keeping the youngest gen as they like to show they are smartest, and sometimes are. In the group dynamic it adds to inner conflict.

  4. A shame they’ve ditched the Baby Boomer team but accept that 4 teams would be too much.
They may pick up younger viewers that haven’t watched the first time around but can relate to the Gen Z questions.
But they may also lose some older viewers that related to the Baby Boomer team and questions.

  5. Was always taught a “Generation” lasts roughly 15-20 years. The term “Millennials” is the new buzzword to complain about everyone younger than 30.
    Baby Boomers: 1940-1965
    Gen X: 1965-1980
    Gen Y: 1980-1994
    Gen Z: 1995-2010
    Gen Alpha: 2011- present

    1. The Baby Boomers are later than that, about 1946-7 on, after the end of the war in 1945. I’m a 1943’er, generally considered War Babies.

  6. Gen Z doesn’t really seem to have a precise start date some say mid 90’s some say January 1 2000 and some say September 11 2001 when the terrorists attacks happened. the most common answer is 1997 when the internet took over the world, how ever Gen Z are only kids who don’t know of a world without mobile phones and the Internet.

  7. On social media, people questioned the spans for each generation and said Andy Lee is actually Gen X and Laurence is Gen Y.

Also many not liking it being pronounced any way but Gen Zed and that the generation is really only used for people born after 2000.

  8. Everyone seems to be raving about the new TBYG. I quite enjoyed the first half an hour, but found the rest of the show dragged on. Why did it need to extend past an hour? For me it was too much of a good thing, I would’ve preferred a tighter format. Don’t think I’ll be able to commit to more than an hour-long episodes for long.

  9. So far I have only seen the generation-specific question section, but I was disappointed that I couldn’t get any of them right for my gen. It made me wonder if the questions are out of sync with the years they have allocated. All the question subjects were too recent.
