SBS lines up a night for ABBA-tragics.

SBS has an ABBAthon  for ABBA-tragics with the Mamma Mia! movie, ABBA In Concert (which is the pick of the bunch) and a Eurovision special.

I guess broadcast rights and a certain notorious actor precludes the inclusion of ABBA: The Movie….

Mamma Mia! (2008 Film, 7.30pm)
Donna (Meryl Streep), an independent hotelier in the Greek islands, is preparing for her daughter’s wedding with the help of two old friends. Meanwhile Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), the spirited bride, has a plan. She secretly invites three men from her mother’s past in hope of meeting her real father and having him escort her down the aisle on her big day.

ABBA In Concert (1979 Feature, 9.30pm)
ABBA in Concert was shot in 1979, mainly at London’s Wembley Arena. The band play their biggest hits in front of a passionate crowd. Featured songs include: Waterloo, Take a Chance on Me, Voulez-Vous, Chiquitita, I Have a Dream, Gimme! Gimme! Gimme!, Knowing Me Knowing You, Summernight City, Dancing Queen, Does Your Mother Know, and Hole in Your Soul.

Eurovision Top 40 Songs (2018 Documentary, 10.30pm)
It’s the world’s ultimate song competition, and Australia has been watching for over 30 years. There are so many highlights in the contest’s history, and now it’s time to decide the top 40 favourite songs. SBS Eurovision hosts Myf Warhurst and Joel Creasey present the Top 40 songs from Eurovision’s 60-year history – with the countdown entirely voted by those who know best; Australia’s Eurovision fans.

Why doesn’t SBS re-screen their Continental Drift ABBA Special Episode that was hosted by Basia Bonkowski as well as Agnetha’s Wrap Your Arms Around Me Special, Eyes of a Woman Special and Frida’s Something Going On TV Specials from the 1980’s? These are much rarer than any of the above scheduled shows.

  3. Yes, it looks like Robert Hughes has literally buggered up any chances of ABBA The Movie appearing on TV again. Shame really, because that film takes me back.

    1. if you go to the ABBA Museum all the way in Stockholm they might still be playing excerpts from the movie there!! They were playing clips from the movie in 2016 but I can’t recall if even then any scenes featuring said actor had been chopped out.

      But how come SBS couldn’t roll this ABBA programming out over Eurovision weekend? Seems more in theme with Eurovision than Dreamgirls or Spice Girls or whatever they had

  4. I’m looking forward to ABBA in Concert.

    I was an ABBA fan back in the 70s at a time when nearly everybody was an ABBA fan but only teenyboppers would admit to it.

    Even though I used to have strong and fond memories of The Beatles from the early to mid-60s, ABBA now endures in my thoughts even more, whereas memories of The Beatles are nowhere near as important any more.

  5. Yes I somehow doubt ABBA The Movie will air again on Australian TV again.

    The Mamma Mia movie sequel is due for cinematic release on 22 July.
