Your story, David, brings to mind an earlier version of Seven Little Australians. It aired in 1973 on ABC and featured Aussie acting greats, the late, lamented Leonard Teale (a stalwart of the long-running pioneer cop show Homicide) and Ruth Cracknell (Maggie Beare in Mother and Son). I have fond memories of the series despite not having seen it for 45 years.
I remember it, but not with any detail.
I watched it when it was repeated in the last decade. I think it was on ABC3. Anna Hruby also starred, as a child actor.
