End of an era? Jerry Springer halts production after 27 years

Sensationalist daytime talk show may finally be shutting the door on outrageous topics.

Sensationalist US talk show The Jerry Springer Show has halted production, with no new episodes planned for the forseeable future.

Staff were informed in April on their employment on the syndicated NBCU production.

After nearly 4,000 episodes with such titles as “I’m Sleeping With My Brother,” “Gay Cousins in Love” and “Pregnant Gals and a Mime” the show’s future is unclear. The CW will screen repeats during the day and is considering an order for more new episodes — but the Hollywood Reporter notes staff are already looking for new jobs.

The Springer series hit premium popularity during the 1990s with its outrageous topics and guests, many of whom were said to be working to scripted situations.

In 2000, one couple appeared on an episode titled “Secret Mistresses Confronted” alongside the husband’s ex-wife, whom the couple accused of stalking. She was found dead the day the episode premiered, and the man was ultimately convicted of her murder.

But it also spawned a hit stage musical Jerry Springer: The Opera which won several awards and had numerous tours, including in Australia.  It may ultimately be the show’s only contribution to society.

Springer, now 74, has said multiple times that his day job is a circus with “no redeeming social value.”

  1. As awful as this was, it was really just a precursor to the heavily scripted confrontational ‘reality’ shows that are everywhere today.
