John Goodman, Danny McBride for HBO comedy.

John Goodman to star in US comedy as the patriarch of a televangelist family.

(Former) Roseanne star John Goodman already has another new project on the way, a half-hour HBO comedy alongside Danny McBride (Eastbound & Down, Vice Principals).

The Righteous Gemstones, also created by McBride, is the story of the world famous Gemstone televangelist family, which has a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work, all in the name of Jesus.

Goodman will star as Eli Gemstone, the patriarch of the Gemstone family. The character is described as unbending and a force in the Ministry game. He’s known the world over for his aggressive salvation techniques, his worldwide ministries, and his award winning weekly television program. His light is fading, but he takes no guff. He is obeyed, unquestioned.

McBride will star as Jesse Gemstone, the eldest son and “heir to the throne.” He walks in his father’s shadow while simultaneously blazing his own path. Like Eli, Jesse demands loyalty from those in his circle, and surrounds himself by those that will follow him. Jesse fancies himself a maverick in the ministry game, taking what Eli has built and expanding it for a more modern audience.

  1. Of course. Gotta give the finger to the Christians, right? After all he needs to pay for the sin of being on a show that actually had about three lines not attacking the President or making fun of Christians. His penance will be paid. Gotta stick it to those depolorables. Don’t worry, we did not think any of the cast are not full court liberals anyway.
But the left likes to punish those who step out of the box and do not goose step with them.

    1. I thought Roseanne character was supportive of Trump while others were against, which was part of sitcom conflict. We have had other dramas built around religions before. Not sure why it is considered off limits.
