New space drama for Netflix

Netflix has greenlit a new 10 part space drama, Away, from Jason Katims (Rise, Friday Night Lights) and Andrew Hinderaker (Penny Dreadful).

Loosely inspired by Chris Jones’ Esquire article of the same name, Away is an epic love story and a thrilling tale of survival set against humanity’s greatest endeavour – the first human mission to Mars.

Emma Green is an American astronaut who must leave her husband and teenage daughter behind in order to command an international space crew embarking upon a treacherous, year-long mission. Away is a series about hope, humanity and how ultimately, we need one another if we are to achieve impossible things.

Katims will executive produce alongside Felicity co-creator Matt Reeves, for Universal Television, True Jack Productions, 6th & Idaho.

No airdate has been announced.

  1. Ehh, until a quality adaptation of Kim Stanley Robinson’s Mars series occurs, which has been teased so many times already over the years, colour me uninterested.

  2. National Geographic have produced a dramatised documentary show called Mars which is excellent and has already explored much of the plot that I imagine this fictional Netflix show will be examining as well. Mars season 2 is could clash with Away by the time it gets screened, but I don’t suppose Netflix or Sci-Fi fans will be too bothered about that.

    2. I didn’t find Mars excellent, hopefully this will be different enough from Mars – leaving out the documentary parts would be an improvement I feel
