News Corp doesn’t rule out owning a Free to Air broadcaster

CEO says such a move is still possible, but growth in Foxtel is the priority.

News Corp may yet acquire a Free to Air broadcaster.

Executive Chairman Michael Miller told Mumbrella’s 360 Conference such a move is still possible, but growth in Foxtel is the priority.

Miller also said a market consolidation is inevitable, though it will still have to adhere to ACCC regulations.

Such deals became possible after a relaxing of the Media Reforms passed last October. Whilst many had speculated it might become TEN’s future owner, a CBS deal ended that happening anytime soon.

There have recently been reports of Nine & SKY News in discussion about a Business channel, but sources suggest they are still inaccurate.

  1. Wow. The way things are going I guess Murdoch thinks buying the ABC is also on the cards… but his got to get ads on them first and the way to do that is to keep pressuring the liberals to cut ABC funding.

    7 looks like the most likely target, in which case I feel for:
    * the staff
    * local news
    * investigative journalism
    which are all likely to go

  2. No no no, we do not want Murdoch getting his grubby hands on free to air networks. He has way too much control of our media already. These ‘media reforms’ should never have gone ahead.

  3. Interesting, given there was talk back in April of the merger between Fairfax and Seven West Media being back on the table (worth $2.3 billion) after Nine bowed out, of course back in March SWM also sold it’s 50% stake in Yahoo7 to Verizon’s Oath.

  4. Such fair and reasonable owners they would be. Expect localism to go and Fox style news out of HQ to replace current TV News.
    Pity Seven staff if this were ever to happen…

  5. “And I for one will welcome our new Murdoch overlords. I’d like to remind them that as a trusted TV Tonight commenter, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground clickbait caves.”

  6. There’s been discussion of Seven West Media divesting or potentially being bought? A News Corp owned Seven? They already work very closely with the AFL and now cricket rights.

    1. If News Corp did buy Seven, it would re-unite the Melbourne station HSV with the Herald Sun. Unless of course, they sold that off as well.
