Canadian drama Anne with an E returns to Netflix in July with its second season.

The expanded ten episode season from stars Amybeth McNulty as Anne Shirley-Cuthbert.

This season introduces new characters including Dalmar Abuzeid (Sebastian Lacroix) and Cory Grüter-Andrew (Cole MacKenzie) conceived by writer Moira Walley-Beckett and an all-female writers’ room.

Inspired by the timeless Canadian novel ”Anne of Green Gables” by Lucy Maud Montgomery, the second season of Anne with an E continues to chart bold new territory, adding new characters and storylines while further exploring themes of identity, prejudice, feminism, bullying, gender parity and empowerment through the lens of its fierce, starry-eyed, irrepressible 14-year-old protagonist.

A coming-of-age story, reimagined by creator Moira Walley-Beckett, Anne with an E stars returning fan favorites Amybeth McNulty (Anne Shirley-Cuthbert), Geraldine James (Marilla Cuthbert), R.H. Thomson (Matthew Cuthbert), Corrine Koslo (Rachel Lynde), Dalila Bela (Diana Barry), Aymeric Jett Montaz (Jerry Baynard), Lucas Zumann (Gilbert Blythe) and Kyla Matthews (Ruby Gillis). 

A CBC and Netflix original series, Anne with an E is produced by Northwood Entertainment and created by Moira Walley-Beckett. The executive producers are Miranda de Pencier, Moira Walley-Beckett, Debra Hayward, Alison Owen and Ken Girotti. John Calvert serves as producer.

Friday 6 July on Netflix.

I started Anne with an E out of curiosity and ended up watching the whole season even though I didn’t expect I would like it, this shows choice of actors made me think of Disney but the show didn’t take long to establish itself as a typically solid Canadian production, the performance of Amybeth McNulty kept the story together which is no small feat considering that this classic story has had many well known movies made of Anne of Green Gables.

    1. I agree I really enjoyed it, some didn’t like it as they were too hung up on the 80s version starting Megan Follows which was also excellent, but I’m glad this series wasn’t too much like. I like how this series delved more into the darker side of being an orphan in the 19th century.
      I fail to see how this show takes anything away from previous versions, it doesn’t try to be a copy it takes its own spin on the books and yes, takes some liberties with the books also. Although I did not like that they changed the storyline of Matthew so much I think that was one part of the book that should have remained.
