US satirical host Samantha Bee has apologised for comments she made about Ivanka Trump, daughter of President Donald Trump.
The remark came during a segment in which Bee juxtaposed a photo that Ivanka tweeted on Sunday showing her cuddling her toddler son Theodore with a US immigration policy that allows border security officials to separate children from their parents if they are caught crossing over into the US.
“Y’know, Ivanka, that’s a beautiful photo of you and your child, but let me just say, one mother to another: do something about your dad’s immigration policies, you feckless c***,” Bee said. “He listens to you. Put on something tight and low-cut and tell him to stop it.”
She later tweeted an apology.
Full Frontal with Samantha Bee‘s network TBS then followed her statement up with an apology of its own.
“Samantha Bee has taken the right action in apologising for the vile and inappropriate language she used about Ivanka Trump last night,” TBS tweeted. “Those words should not have been aired. It was our mistake too, and we regret it.”
But White House press secretary Sarah Sanders called Bee’s language “vile and vicious”.
“Her disgusting comments and show are not fit for broadcast,” she added.
Car retail website Autotrader.com also announced it was pulling its ads from the show.
It follows similar criticism in Australia over use of the same word in Tonightly with Tom Ballard in March. ABC apologised for the comment.
Full Frontal airs in Australia on SBS VICELAND.
