Seven crew robbed in London

Balaclava-clad bikers steal a $25k camera from reporter Laurel Irving in a brazen heist in London.

Seven News European correspondent Laurel Irving and her cameraman were the victims of brazen robbers in London overnight, when two masked men on bikes stole their news camera.

Irving told 3AW 10pm she had just finished filming a live cross to Sunrise at around 10pm local time in the Islington borough, surrounded by up-market restaurants and pubs.

“I was really busy and noted that they were wearing balaclavas, which you would think would be a dead giveaway as to their intentions,” she told 3AW’s Ross and John.

“I started talking into the camera and while that was happening one of them walked up to Jimmy, my cameraman, and started talking to him.

“All of a sudden Jimmy took the camera off the tripod . At which point I stepped in and said, ‘Hey, what’s going on here?’

“I tried to grab the camera to stop it and Jimmy said, ‘No, no, he’s got a gun!’

“So I let it go and they took off on the bike carrying this very expensive and large camera.”

However Irving also confirmed no weapon had been sighted.

“We never saw any weapons but Jimmy was convinced he didn’t at least have a gun, he had a knife.”

The camera is worth around $25,000. Police are investigating.

Both Seven staffers were unharmed in the incident.

  1. Sadly crime in London is spiralling out of control, in large part down to the mayor and his policy of curtailling the use of stop and search by the police, something he was warned would happen when he proposed it during his election campaign.

  4. This is not the first time that I’ve heard of this happening. While in San Francisco in the days leading up to the Superbowl in early 2016 (for which SF was the host city), I read in the local press that a TV news cameraman was robbed at gunpoint of his professional camera gear as he was loading it into his news car just near Superbowl City in San Francisco’s business district.

    I wouldn’t imagine that it would end up on eBay … too easy to track down.

  5. sounds very suspicious – Gun, knife – sorry didn’t see anything ?
    Just happened to be looking for camera crew in a busy part of town 10.00pm at night

  8. What would they do with that…and how did they know the team would be there at that time…all a bit weird and very scary….reporting news is not as easy as it seems sometime.
