ABC art show fails to draw crowds

Ratings: MasterChef wins its slot, Love Island wraps. Seven wins Thursday.

ABC’s new art entertainment show Everyone’s a Critic has struggled to win over viewers, with just 195,000 viewers in its second outing.

As viewers switched off after Grand Designs Australia it landed last in its timeslot behind SBS. It again highlights the difficulty in trying to recreate Gogglebox in another arena.

MasterChef was again tops in entertainment shows at 738,000 viewers in a Katherine Gorge cook-off, although down on last Thursday. Seven and Nine both had staggered schedules due to sporting commitments. Body Hack was also down for TEN.

The Handmaid’s Tale was up for SBS at 215,000 but  Peter Kuruvita’s Coastal Kitchen was down slightly.

Love Island wrapped its season with 198,000 for the winner announced, just enough to top multichannels as Nine talks up its cross-platform performance.

Seven News, ACA and The Chase won early slots.

Seven network won Thursday with 33.6% then Nine 25.8%, TEN 19.2%, ABC 13.3% and SBS 8.0%.

Seven News was #1 for Seven with 942,000 / 833,000 then The Chase (605,000 / 377,000), Seven’s AFL (516,000), Home and Away (425,000 in 3 cities) and Funniest Cutest Kittens Ever (277,000 in 3 cities). Wimbledon drew 218,000.

Nine News led for Nine with 880,000 / 854,000 then A Current Affair (664,000), Hot Seat (506,000 / 308,000), Thursday Night NRL (365,000 in 2 cities). RBT was 188,000 in 3 cities and Britain’s Got Talent drew 179,000 in 3 cities.

MasterChef Australia (738,000) won its slot for TEN followed by The Project (487,000 / 311,000), TEN Eyewitness News (416,000), Todd Sampson’s Body Hack 2.0 (362,000). Family Feud was 265,000 and Blue Bloods was just 126,000.

ABC News (657,000), 7:30 (431,000), Grand Designs Australia (403,000), Sammy J (278,000), Everyone’s a Critic (195,000), and Think Tank (179,000) comprised ABC’s night. Victoria was just 126,000.

On SBS it was Great British Railway Journeys (256,000), The Handmaid’s Tale (215,000), Peter Kuruvita’s Coastal Kitchen (132,000) and SBS World News (126,000). Dian Fossey: Secrets in the Mist was just 80,000.

  1. I was on TEN all night….I seem to be watching a lot of TEN lately….I guess because of Masterchef and TEN news…. I have never watched Todd Sampson’s Body Hack…but last nights episode was really interesting… more documentary style than reality….I enjoyed it…very much.

  2. I have been looking at The Handmaid’s Tail time shifted figures and noticed how it more than doubles its number! It just shows you how we are viewing drama these days, preferring to not watch dramas live but at a time we prefer. It just shows you how networks are having to think about what they put on air and when. Reality TV appears to not be going away anytime soon, with MCA, House Rules, and coming shows like Survivor, The Block and The Bachelor doing well either with ratings or on social media etc that us drama lovers have to turn to streaming options and non-FTA TV for a drama fix. I am wondering what our FTA networks will air to meet their Oz drama points this year…I assume Doctor Doctor, Wanted and 800 Words may be the only things in the mix. I can’t remember your Upfronts from last year David if 10 has anything beyond Neighbours. I personally prefer 10s dramas than 7 & 9…

    1. Sure: I watch HMT Thursdays whenever I’m ready streaming. Not on-air.

Also, all FTA’s will meet the quotas, they have too. Remember Ten and neighbours and Seven’s Home and Away count as a substantial percentage.
I would expect Nine will be showing a lot of NZ/Aust movies come Summer.

      1. Thank you David! Search – of course! I remembered Russell Coight (which hung over form last year) and How to Stay Married will be a hoot! Can’t remember Playing for Keeps…will do the search. and Yes @James-original quotas is the one thing that keeps them all afloat, I just wish they would do more…and quality ones at that.

  3. I didn’t watch Everyone’s a Critic this week, but last weeks ep inspired me to travel into Brisbane city to visit two art galleries, which I haven’t done for many years.

  4. With 5 months of the rating season almost past…how will Nine overcome Seven in the second half of the year..will it be the Ninja and The Block ..or is too far behind for the year to take the ratings crown. It would be interesting to see where Seven and Nine are tracking compared to this time last year – in terms of ratings and excluding MasterChef for Ten…has there been any improvement in there numbers this year?

      1. Yeah it will be interesting. What is struggling for Nine, particularly in Melbourne is the AFL footy show..consistently beaten by the Front Bar. This doesn’t help Nine on a Thursday night when there isn’t any reality TV on to save it.

    1. Seven dominated the last quarter last year with the new US breakout hit The Good Doctor, after doing relatively poorly the previous quarter or so (3rd year in a row) with Ninja and Block dominating.

Interesting to see if Family Food Fight lifts for Nine and makes a contest.

    2. Channel 9 will air more episodes of Ninja Warrior for 2018 from last season. With Ninja Warrior to go against MCA, I think Nine will be strong form and take out the ratings week.

  5. I haven’t had a chance to watch “Everyone’s a Critic” yet, so I don’t know myself – but I’ve noticed it has collected some quite favourable comments in otherwise completely non-art places around the traps from people who aren’t really in to art. I’ll have to make a point of watching it soon.
