Airdate: Killing Eve, Marcella.

Ripping crime from the UK finally gets its TV broadcast from Friday.

As previously noted, Killing Eve is getting a television broadcast on ABC from this Friday night at 8:30pm.

The ripping series, which has screened in full on iview, has won rave reviews and an Emmy nomination for Sandra Oh (see 5 star review here).

Based on the novellas by Luke Jennings and written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, BBCA’s Killing Eve centres on two women; Eve is a bored, whip-smart, pay-grade MI5 security officer whose desk-bound job doesn’t fulfil her fantasies of being a spy. Villanelle is a mercurial, talented killer who clings to the luxuries her violent job affords her. Killing Eve topples the typical spy-action thriller as these two fiercely intelligent women, equally obsessed with each other, go head to head in an epic game of cat and mouse.

It will be followed by UK drama Marcella from 9:15pm.

This is a noir-style series by Swedish screenwriter Hans Rosenfeldt, creator of The Bridge. It debuted in the UK in 2016 with a second season airing in 2018.

After 11 years absence from the force, Marcella finds herself drawn back to police work following the return of the Grove Park Killer, her last case before she left to start a family.

  1. Marcella is highly recommended though some may find yet another emotionally conflicted female cop with a complicated life rather familiar if they also watch the SBS, but Anna Friel’s performance is the main attraction here. Having said this I’m not sure why I feel so pensive about season two, perhaps I might watch season one again first.
