Cameras roll on more Mustangs FC

ABC's teen drama boasts 67% females behind and in front of the camera.

Filming is underway in Melbourne on a second season of the all-girls soccer drama Mustangs FC for ABC ME.

Produced by Amanda Higgs and Rachel Davis for Matchbox Pictures, females comprise 67% of the cast and crew roles.

New cast include Tharanya Tharan (Zee) and Miah Grace Madden (Jas) and Imogen Lamble (Georgie) alongside regular cast members Emmanuelle Mattana (Marnie), Ashleigh Marshall (Liv), Monique Heath (Lara), Molly Broadstock (Bella), Gemma Chua Tran (Anusha), and Celine Ajobong (Ruby).

Also returning for Season 2 are Jacek Koman, Pia Miranda, Stephen Hall and the voice of Celia Pacqoula. Tommy Little joins as club manager, Anton.

This series is written by Kirsty Fisher, Shanti Gudgeon, Magda Wozniak, Rae Earl, Alix Beane and Jonathan Gavin and directed by Corrie Chen, Jess Harris, Roger Hodgman and Ana Kokkinos.

“We are so excited to be bringing Australian and international audiences the continuing adventures of the Mustangs team,” said co-creators Davis and Higgs. “With multiple new cast members such as Tharanya Tharan, Miah Grace Madden and Tommy Little, and a huge commitment to promoting diversity and gender inclusivity in front of and behind the camera, we’re thrilled to return with the next season of Mustangs FC.”

Seasons 1 and 2 have been sold to British children’s television broadcaster CBBC and the American children’s television network, Universal Kids.

Season 2 brings audiences more complex, relatable stories about real young women and their friendships, challenges and triumphs. There’s more of the Mustangs’ signature humour and heart, wrapped around stories about bullying, body image, sexuality, and the politics of moon cups, menstruation and mansplaining.

The show has resonated amongst the young demographic, season 1 was one of the ABC’s most successful local productions in 2017 and in the UK it regularly entered the top 10 list for CBBC every week, ranking #1 in its timeslot among all 10-15 demos. Season 1 is now airing on Universal Kids.
