The much-speculated Downton Abbey movie is officially proceeding.

The official Downton Abbey Twitter account confirmed the news with a card reading: “We cordially invite you to return to Downton Abbey — Only in Cinemas.”

Gareth Neame, Carnival Film’s executive chairman, said: “When the television series drew to a close it was our dream to bring the millions of global fans a movie and now, after getting many stars aligned, we are shortly to go into production. Julian’s script charms, thrills and entertains and in Brian Percival’s hands we aim to deliver everything that one would hope for as Downton comes to the big screen.”

“Since the series ended, fans of Downton have long been waiting for the Crawley family’s next chapter,” said Focus chairman Peter Kujawski. “We’re thrilled to join this incredible group of filmmakers, actors and craftspeople, led by Julian Fellowes and Gareth Neame, in bringing back the world of Downton to the big screen.”

  1. Looking forward to the scenes where Lord Grantham argues the merits of Benito and Adolph’s Fascism vs Tom’s sympathy for the rising Socialist movements – then gradually comes to realise he might have been wrong.

(But, since it’s being made for an early 21st century audience, he’ll no doubt settle for agreeing that there’s bad on both sides…).

    1. Therein lies my biggest issue with the show. It had never risen above being a mere guilty pleasure as the world of Downton was never believable due to its blatant 21st century sensibility.

      1. How dare you suggest it isn’t historically accurate!

Next you’ll be telling me Bates _isn’t_ a time-traveller sent back to various points in Lord Grantham’s life to ensure that The Abdication happens and we end up with the correct Queen for our timeline…

  2. This is great news. They said that Maggie Smith didn’t want to do the movie & it would be set 10 years later & her character would no longer be around. She must have changed her mind.

    1. Dame Maggie Smith hasn’t done much work since DA, just a bit of voice acting. She was in the Royal Box at Wimbledon the other day, looking good.

  3. Great news! Downton Abbey was an enthralling series and it’s wonderful to be getting a bonus movie after all this time. Hopefully there will be more movies down the line.
