L.A. Confidential series unlikely to proceed

It's the second time a small screen version of James Ellroy novel has stalled after the pilot.

Here we go again….

The small screen adaptation of L.A. Confidential may not proceed after a deal could not be reached between Lionsgate TV / New Regency and CBS All Access.

Efforts to find a new home have failed. US reports claim the Lionsgate TV drama, based on the James Ellroy novel and subsequent feature film, had been eyed to land at CBS All Access, may have asked for a higher licensing fee than the SVOD home had expected. However CBS All Access’ does have a hefty financial commitment to Star Trek: Discovery and period drama Strange Angel, set in the 1930s.

A pilot starring Brian J. Smith (Sense8) and Walton Goggins and written and exec produced by Jordan Harper (Gotham) and showrunner Anna Fricke, was well received but was also considered darker than traditional CBS fare.

A 2003 pilot starring Kiefer Sutherland, Eric Roberts and Melissa George was also shot but not picked up.

Lionsgate TV and CBS TV Studios declined to comment.

  1. The comment ‘considered darker than traditional CBS fare’ is interesting, perhaps that is more of a clue to it’s problem as I would think CBS will want to sell the show elsewhere at some point.
