Masterchef beats Ninja, House Rules on big Monday.

Ratings: As grand finals battle it out, all three reality shows attract healthy Free to Air audiences.

There were big crowds across three reality shows last night with grand finals in play (including two oddly split across two nights). That was a win for Free to Air TV.

MasterChef Australia took line honours at 961,000 viewers ahead of Australian Ninja Warrior‘s 906,000 and House Rules‘ 853,000 -the latter rose to 915,000 for the moment Toad & Mandy won the Seven series. MasterChef also ranked best in the demos, although Have You Been Paying Attention? topped two of those.

HYBPA? in its later 9pm slot drew an excellent 856,000 viewers well in front of Media Watch, Gordon Ramsay, Four Corners and a Celebrity special on Nine. In the reality bunfight ABC’s overall Monday was down slightly.

Seven News, ACA and The Chase were again timeslot winners.

Seven network won Monday with 27.7% then Nine 27.3%, TEN 22.6%, ABC 16.0% and SBS 6.5%.

Seven News was #1 for Seven with 1.05m / 1.05m then House Rules (915,000 / 853,000), Home and Away (724,000), The Chase (611,000 / 390,000) and Ramsay’s 24 Hours to Hell and Back (418,000).

Nine News (1.02m / 1.01m) was best for Nine then Australian Ninja Warrior (906,000), A Current Affair (816,000), Hot Seat (565,000 / 335,000) and When Celebrity Goes Horribly Wrong (285,000). Footy Classified was 103,000 in 3 cities and 100% Footy drew just 45,000 in 2 cities.

MasterChef Australia won is slot with 961,000 for TEN then Have You Been Paying Attention? (856,000), The Project (582,000 / 360,000) and TEN Eyewitness News (422,000). The Graham Norton Show was 254,000.

ABC News (750,000), 7:30 (576,000), Back Roads (568,000), Media Watch (522,000), Four Corners (415,000), Q&A (387,000) and Think Tank (230,000) comprised ABC’s night.

On SBS it was Inside Windsor Castle (255,000), 24 Hours in Emergency (185,000), SBS World News (154,000) and How to Get Fit Fast (138,000).

Peter Rabbit on ABC KIDS topped multichannels with 249,000.

  1. Good to see MCA rate so well up against other reality shows – including the HR finale. It was a really good episode. Shame it went over time again. HYBPA didn’t start until 9.10pm so maybe some of those whopping ratings were due to MCA?

  2. David, is this the first time the final Grand Final episode of a reality show comes third in the slot ?
    Caps off another lacklustre House Rules season I guess. Seven really needs something new, not a place getter.

    1. No. There have been a lot of failed shows that limped to the finish line just to give away their prize money. Look at the last Biggest Loser, they announced the winner in Studio 10. I don’t see a major problem with HR numbers, all three did good business.

    2. There is one very basic change that should increase HR viewership immediately – take the reveals back to one single night. The advent of the two-night reveal a couple of seasons ago was a big turn-off for many
