Second season for The Night Manager?

Writers are said to be quietly developing a potential second season of glossy spy thriller.

It’s looking like a second season of The Night Manager is in the pipeline, even though it is yet to be formally announced.

British writer Matthew Orton and spy author Charles Cumming are understood to make up two of the four writers that are working on the series. Producers The Ink Factory are being increasingly coy about the show’s return, according to media reports.

Complicating matters is the fact that author John Le Carré did not write a sequel to his book and has been loathe to allow TV producers or filmmakers the opportunity to expand on his work without one. However, his sons, Simon and Stephen Cornwell, both run The Ink Factory.

Cumming told the Daily Mail, “Le Carré has never allowed one of his stories to have a [film or TV] sequel that is not based on a novel. So our job is to write a season that’s going to be even better than the first one, but also stay faithful to the tone of the world that was created by le Carré and to the characters.”

The series starring Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie, Olivia Colman & Elizabeth Debicki screened in Australia on both BBC First and SBS, but its inclusion on the latter is one of the “Off Charter” titles noted by Free TV Australia.

  1. David, I realise you’re on holidays, so there’s no rush to reply, but I just wanted to ask if this second season was in addition to and distinct from the adaptation of ‘The Little Drummer Girl’, being worked on by the same production company, I’ve heard rumours about?

  2. Unless they are looking at creating another pseudo Bond some stories based on books are best left alone, obviously the character Jonathan Pine cries out for a TV series of his own but the author John Le Carre should always have the final approval and his wishes respected.
