Tight race for reality juggernauts

Ratings: Not much in it as 3 reality shows draw big crowds. Jack Irish tops current affairs, Seven wins Sunday.

It was a reality TV bunfight last night with little separating the big 3 juggernauts, but Australian Ninja Warrior clinched victory for Nine at 939,000 viewers ahead of House Rules (928,000) and MasterChef Australia (854,000 from 7:30pm).

MasterChef snared the 2 younger demos while Ninja led in 25-54. Impressively all three found strong audiences.

ABC’s Jack Irish was largely disaffected by the competition, drawing 684,000 viewers, ahead of 60 Minutes and Sunday Night.

Seven News topped the night beating out Nine News.

Seven Network won the night with 32.1% then Nine 29.7%, TEN 15.7%, ABC 15.0% and SBS 7.5%.

Seven News (1.19m) was #1 for Seven then House Rules (928,000), Sunday Night (599,000) and Crime Investigation Australia (373,000).

Nine News (994,000) led for Nine then Australian Ninja Warrior (939,000), 60 Minutes (602,000) and Killer Women with Piers Morgan (289,000).

MasterChef Australia (854,000) was best for TEN followed by The Sunday Project (374,000 / 279,000), TEN Eyewitness News (278,000), the last Family Feud (213,000), Sports Tonight (157,000) and NCIS (71,000).

ABC News (688,000), Jack Irish (684,000), Grand Designs New Zealand (516,000) and F***ing Adelaide (216,000 / 138,000) comprised ABC’s night.

On SBS it was Tour de France (186,000), First Civilisations (183,000) and SBS World News (172,000).

7mate’s Iron Man movie topped multichannels at 200,000 viewers.

  1. Ninja, Masterchef & Jack Irish makes channel surfing a feature of Sunday nights at the moment. MasterChef this year has been spectacular with no clear favourites still.

  2. Jack Irish proving local drama can hold its own in tough timeslots and again, reinforcing the ABC as the home of free-to-air Aussie drama. Where would we be without it?

    1. Jack Irish rates 168k more than Grand Designs NZ which costs a fraction of the price. Which is almost as much as First Civilisations rates in total. It’s a good PBS documentary series that SBS put money and they must be disappointed with the numbers.

  3. MasterChef Australia (854,000) Sports Tonight (157,000) and NCIS (71,000)
TEN plunges off a 700,000-metre cliff at 9:15 (or whenever). TEN needs a reshuffle. Giving a head start to 7 & 9 at 7pm too. Several options. 5:30 ST, 6:00 FF, 6:30 Project, 7:00 MC etc., or 6:00 FF, 6:30 ST, 7:00 MC etc.

  4. Both Ninja and Masterchef are absolutely excellent right now. I’ll be cheering on one of my mates on Ninja tonight and also have become such a fan of the Blue Mountain climbers. It’s thrilling, positive television that Nine have knocked out of the park.

    1. Agree completely. Happy that all three channels are sharing the winnings as this means better competition for the viewers. And of course local content means jobs.
