Screenwriter & Director David Stevens, whose scripts included Breaker Morant, The Sum of Us and The Thorn Birds sequel has died, aged 77.
He died on Tuesday of cancer in hospice in Whangarei, New Zealand.
Palestinian-born Stevens wrote for 1970s TV shows Division Four, Matlock Police, Homicide, The Sullivans, Bluey, Young Ramsay, Cop Shop and Skyways before being nominated for an Oscar for Breaker Morant.
He went on to write miniseries A Thousand Skies, Queen, The Thorn Birds: The Missing Years, Aftershock: Earthquake in New York plus Prisoner, Merlin and Crime and Punishment.
His play The Sum of Us became a feature film with Jack Thompson & Russell Crowe.
Directing credits included Women of the Sun, A Town Like Alice, Five Mile Creek, Solo One, Undercover and The Clinic.
Stevens’ final film as a director was the 1988 romantic drama Kansas starring Matt Dillon.
