Amazon locks on Lord of the Rings writers

Plus a new event series from the Russo Brothers, and horror series Them.

Amazon recently announced Hollywood screenwriters JD Payne and Patrick McKay (Star Trek 4, Jungle Cruise, Escape) would pen its upcoming Lord of the Rings series.

Payne and McKay note, “We are absolutely thrilled to be partnering with Amazon Prime Video to bring it to life anew. We feel like Frodo, setting out from the Shire, with a great responsibility in our care — it is the beginning of the adventure of a lifetime.”

Amazon  has also teamed with the Anthony Russo & Joe Russo’s AGBO Studios on an unnamed global franchise, designed to involve local language and local production series.

“The Russo Brothers have impacted the pop culture barometer of creative excellence with their vision for both Avengers: Infinity War and Captain America: Civil War,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon Studios. “They brought a level of scale and execution to those films that has raised the bar for audiences everywhere and we can’t wait for them to do the same for us on this project for our Amazon Prime Video customer. We are thrilled to be working with Joe and Anthony Russo and their AGBO Studios as they build this incredible, multifaceted, international franchise.”

Horror series Them was also given a 2 season order from executive producer Lena Waithe (The Chi, Dear White People), writer and executive producer Little Marvin, and executive producers Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, and Michael Connelly with Vertigo Prime.

In Them: Covenant, set in 1953, Alfred and Lucky Emory decide to move their family from North Carolina to an all-white Los Angeles neighbourhood. The family’s home on a tree lined, seemingly idyllic street becomes ground zero where malevolent forces both real and supernatural threaten to taunt, ravage and destroy them.
