Australian Survivor wins premiere slot for TEN

Ratings: Champions v Contenders makes a splash on its season return, ahead of big guns on the horizon.

Good news for TEN today with Australian Survivor winning its slot and improving on its 2017 debut.

The Champions v Contenders edition pulled 716,000 viewers and topped the demos, an improvement on the 639,000 season launch in 2017. That was ahead of Anh’s Brush with Fame, Highway Patrol, 7:30 and Britain’s Got Talent. The show held well until it wrapped at 9:15pm. Big guns are looming on the horizon so this is a window of opportunity.

Elsewhere US procedural 9-1-1 debuted with 557,000 for Seven, not quite enough to pip The Weekly with Charlie Pickering on 573,000.

Pointless now without a roadblock was 311,000 which is roughly on par with what it had been attracting across 3 channels for the bulk of its run. The upside is TEN now adds extra viewers with ONE & ELEVEN offerings.

SBS drama Dead Lucky slipped from 234,000 to 173,000 and Food Safari Water was 172,000, but the network share was above average.

Nine News, ACA and The Chase won their slots.

Seven network won Wednesday with 28.6% then Nine 25.7%, TEN 19.9%, ABC 17.7% and SBS 8.1%.

Seven News was 970,000 / 930,000 for Seven then Home and Away (665,000), Highway Patrol (657,000 / 582,000), The Chase (615,000 / 385,000), 9-1-1 (557,000), and Criminal Minds (362,000).

Nine News was #1 for Nine with 979,000 / 936,000 followed by A Current Affair (776,000), Hot Seat (532,000 / 321,000) and Britain’s Got Talent (497,000 / 316,000).

Australian Survivor debuted with 716,000 then The Project (506,000 / 309,000), TEN Eyewitness News (422,000), Pointless (311,000), Instinct (252,000) and Madam Secretary (129,000).

ABC News (704,000), Anh’s Brush with Fame (671,000), The Weekly with Charlie Pickering (573,000), 7:30 (565,000), You Can’t Ask That (406,000), Adam Hills: The Last Leg (295,000) and Think Tank (235,000) comprised ABC’s night.

Great British Railway Journeys (241,000) topped SBS followed by Simon Reeve in Burma (211,000), Dead Lucky (173,000), Food Safari Water (172,000) and SBS World News (119,000).

Big Bang on 9GO! topped multichannels at 196,000.

Sunrise: 264,000

  1. Darn, how good was the first episode of Survivor! Once again, production values, narrative and look completely knocked out of the park whilst still feeling like ‘our’ version (except the brief moments when Russell was stealing the spotlight). Johnathan has settled into being the host very comfortably. Can’t wait to see how this goes.

    1. I believe it’s when the show is broadcast across all other mainstream digital channels at the same time to maximise viewership potential, so the show was on Ten, One and Eleven at the same time.

  2. “Pointless now without a roadblock was 311,000 which is roughly on par with what it had been attracting across 3 channels for the bulk of its run.”

Proves the point that simulcasts make absolutely no difference at all other than losing viewers who would otherwise watch alternative content on the channels taken over by the simulcasts.

As I’ve always said, whether a show airs on 1,2,3 or 15 channels, if you’re going to watch it you will, if not you won’t save for a very small handful of people who don’t bother changing channels (and is it really worth it just for them?).

  3. The first episode of Survivor was very good. You always know with the early eps who is going to get dumped at Tribal Council as their back story is featured heavily. And when that bloke dissed the girls, there was only ever going to be one outcome…

  4. I watched 9-1-1 because from what I’d seen in the ads appealed to me. I was a little disappointed, the show was a bit mumbo jumbo with no real storyline to get viewers intrigued. I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch it again.

  5. Instinct for most of its run was holding steady in the low 400s but the last two weeks has shed a lot of viewers. Madam Secretary never does well so 129K is no surprise.

    1. Ten leave it there because once consolidated is added its usually over doubled its figures, Instinct however, disappointing drop buts its start keeps getting later and later.

      1. Instinct has been doing the same as well, Timeshifted it was picking up 135,000 extra on the 398,000 it did on July 18th (July 25th’s aren’t up yet), plus only one more episode so it won’t move. Actually surprises me TEN didn’t hold Elementary off and not start it this week in the late 10pm Sunday slot, could have been a good follow on replacement for Instinct.
