"Heartfelt, joyous and full of the cheeky off-beat humour" says cast farewelling Seven drama.

Speculation about a final season for 800 Words is now confirmed with cast recently noting storylines wrapping up.

Episodes which returned this week are the second half of a third season order totalling 16 episodes.

Star Erik Thomson recently posted on social media, “Four nights until the final season of 800 Words premieres on Ch7 Australia, and what a journey it has been. These episodes are heartfelt, joyous and full of the cheeky off-beat humour that we know and love. They take twists and turns, throw up surprises and allow our characters to seek and perhaps find some resolution in their lives. Please tune in 8.45 Tuesday night to celebrate what has been a much loved show and find out just how exactly it concludes over the next 7-8 weeks.”

Actor Benson Jack Anthony also bid farewell to a “final chapter.”

The series about a widower relocating his family to New Zealand debuted in 2015 to warm reviews, as an Australian and NZ co-production. The mix of drama, romance and comedy has also enjoyed a Dutch remake Zomer in Zeeland (Summer in Zeeland).

Seven’s upcoming local dramas include Wanted, The Blake Mysteries and production to begin on Ms. Fisher’s MODern Murder Mysteries.

Meanwhile Seven-owned NZ production company Great Southern Television has just announced a 2 part miniseries on NZ rugby champion Jonah Lomu for NZ channel Three in 2019.

Seven Studios’ Director of Content Distribution and Rights Therese Hegarty said: “Lomu’s story of triumph and disaster is legendary, and we are thrilled that Phil and his team at Great Southern Television will be bringing that story to global audiences.”

800 Words is expected to bow out in early October.

Seven has been contacted for comment.

  1. My Wife and I watched all three seasons on netflix here in the once good old USA. We loved it. Wish netflix would pick it up for more good fun. Hope they will have season four. Made me miss my time in Australia. Lovely Country and wounderful people. That was fifty years ago. That’s how much fun I had in your country.

  2. They all ways take good Aussie & Normal shows off so far Family feud Love child House husbands winners & losers packed to the rafters the secret daughter now maybe this show and so many more

  3. And meanwhile we continue to be bombarded with crime, detective and murder shows. What is wrong with writers that they can no longer sustain a story without the sensationalism?

  4. Oh, that’s a shame.
Have really enjoyed 800 Words, especially the first season…light-hearted and charming .The NZ coastal scenery is stunning as well. Though seemed to lose its way a bit last season ,with far too much emphasis on silly love triangles and pairing up just about everyone in town. Definitely one of the better light, local dramas of the last few years…

    1. Agree that the love triangles are a bit too much (including sex scenes with teens), but in between there are some great stories and characters. This first episode seemed to be crafted to tie up all the cliffhangers left last season, so hopefully now that everyone has sorted their love lives, the show can get back to the quirky fun.

  5. Baffled at Seven’s silence on this. Are they worried they’ll get adverse publicity axing an Australian (and New Zealand) drama? I think most people understand the quality waned along with ratings. But it would have been nice to have it billed as a final season.

    1. Australian networks don’t like to mention when something is being axed. City Homicide was never officially axed by the network just rested.

    1. A Place To Call Home was Seven’s next big drama after Packed To The Rafters. After they axed that, because it didn’t rate well with younger viewers, they created 800 Words as a co-production with NZ to appeal to viewers under 55. 3 seasons is about as much as an Australian network drama gets these days.

  6. Thnaks for the update. Disappointing that it wraps after only 3 seasons and 40 epidsodes. Having not watched this weeks episode, I would have thought there was much more life in the lives of these characters. Shame another 7 drama ends, their drama slate seems light on and obviously the lure of miniseries earns them sufficient drama points, while depeleting the number of actual hours we get to view Aussie stories!

    1. To be fair, 7 also produces hours of Home & Away each year giving it centre stage in their nightly lineup

Nine therefore has to screen more hour-long dramas to reach their drama quota
