“It’s like just before people commit suicide”

News Corp columnist Miranda Devine, a panelist on Nine’s rolling Live coverage of events in Canberra, today made an unfortunate remark when viewing the tense, silent mood inside the House of Representatives.
After Karl Stefanovic remarked that Turnbull looked surprisingly relaxed, Devine suggested, “It’s like just before people commit suicide, they get very relaxed and happy.”
Stefanovic and co-host Georgie Gardner, after stunned silence, quickly moved on.

"Just before you commit suicide you get very calm and happy" – did I just hear right? Did Miranda Devine really just say that @TheTodayShow? If she did, please get her off air immediately. That was UNACCEPTABLE and UNSAFE. #auspol #mentalhealth #libspill

Right wing Newscorp commentator. They’re never known for their sensitivity or common sense.
Left wing social media commentator. They,re never known for their tolerance of other opinions or common sense.
That would be funny of there was such a thing as a left wing commentator in this country.
Jonothan Green, Phillip Adams and Jacqeline Maley not left wing enough for you?
They’re not exactly in the mainstream media, are they? And they don’t have their own tv shows either like all the lib bots on Sky news.
If commentary all throughout the past two days hadn’t been about “Malcolm Turnbull’s political suicide” on many forms of media (including the ABC), I think the outrage against Ms Devine’s comments may be warranted…… but then again this is Twitter and the Twitterati like nothing more than sticking it to a woman for having an opinion.
Tony I heard the comment and it was highly inappropriate which is why I filed on it and why the hosts fell silent. Twitter had nothing to do with it.
Phew, I swore that was Celia Pacquola until I clicked!
Personally, Today needed more Greenwood and Dastyari and less Markson and Devine this morning.
Was watching at the time, thought it was interesting that Dastyari was the first to speak after that.
Interesting he was on Today and not Studio 10.
Yes I found that quite interesting too. Ten could do a lot worse than trying to lock down Dastyari for political content.
she is on the Today Show because of instances like this. Nine Network and Today’s producers know that she will say something offensive. they dont really care, they will probably just make a statement saying that the Nine Network does not condone her comments and then direct people to the phone numbers for lifeline etc. She will be back on the show next week.
What an over reaction.. can’t anyone say anything without the touchy feely PC brigade creating drama
Not an over reaction at all. It’s disgraceful and she should be removed from television. How does she know what people “look like” before they kill themselves?
Commentators are not hired to day “anything”. They are hired to offer opinion and experienced insight but it must adhere to community and broadcasting standards. SKY News recently saw what happened when someone did not observe this.
What an over-reaction! Can’t conservative commentators say anything without being inconsiderate for effect?
Ask Yassmin Abdel-Magied if it’s only conservative commentators who get called out on things they say.
Note to self: definitely need to start using a sarcasm tag like ‘/s’ around here…
What appalling comments. Seriously this woman is a pain with what comes out of her mouth sometimes.
How many suicides has she stood there and witnessed? What a stupid thing to say.
