Lance Bass loses out on Brady Bunch house

Updated: Here's the story of a dubious real estate sale...

Former N-Sync singer Lance Bass has missed out on purchasing the Los Angeles home which featured in The Brady Bunch, after thinking his bid had been successful.

On Friday he tweeted, “Super excited to announce they accepted my offer on the #BradyBunch house last night!!!”

The house, used for exterior shots, was on the market for more than $US1.88 million ($AU2.55m). Bass had plans to renovate inside in the style of the show’s interiors (originally filmed on a sound stage).

Maureen McCormick, who played Marcia Brady, wrote in response to Bass’ tweet, “Congratulations! ❤️❤️❤️” and joked, “May all your problems from here on out always be solved in a half hour!”

“Thanks! You will most certainly be the first dinner guest!! I’m honored you approve,” Bass tweeted back on Saturday.

But an upset Bass later indicated he had lost out due to “unforseen circumstances” by a Hollywood studio which outbid him. Paramount perhaps? The house is reportedly the most-photographed in the US following the White House.

Marcia Marcia Marcia! Im feeling heartbroken today. As many of you may have heard, we placed the winning bid on the iconic Brady Bunch house—at least that’s what we were told. The agent representing the estate informed us we made the winning bid (which was WAY over the asking price) after the final deadline for all offers had passed—even writing up the “winning bid” for my team after informing me of the good news. Isn’t a deadline a deadline? This was a dream come true for me and I spent the night celebrating amongst friends, family, and fans alike. The next day, due to “unforeseen circumstances” the same agent informed us that there’s another Corporate Buyer (Hollywood studio) who wants the house at any cost. We were prepared to go even higher but totally discouraged by the sellers agent, they will outperform any bid with unlimited resources. How is this fair or legal?? How can I compete with a billion dollar corporate entity? I truly believe I was used to drive up the price of the home knowing very well that this corporation intended on making their offer and it’s not a good feeling. I feel used but most importantly I’m hurt and saddened by this highly questionable outcome. I just hope it is not demolished. Thanks for all the love and support. #CrushedDream #ShadyAF #DouglasElliman #ShadyBrady To make me happier you can register and vote November 6th!

Updated: Discovery-owned Home & Garden TV has purchased the property and plans to restore it.

“I am excited to share that HGTV is the winning bidder and will restore the Brady Bunch home to its 1970s glory as only HGTV can,” CEO David Zaslav said.

“More details to come over the next few months, but we will bring all the resources to bear to tell safe, fun stories with this beloved piece of American TV history.”

  1. If it is to be for a theme park perhaps they’ll jack it up and move it to a lot, could be a two for one deal. With the moving on it being done for one of those house moving shows like Massive Moves, Haulin’ House or etc., I’m sure Viacom/Paramount would have one of those shows on one of their many channels.

  2. Well I very much doubt a studio would buy it to demolish it …yes sounds like a re-boot or perhaps a mini suburban theme park ? Oops , there goes the neighbourhood.

    1. Could be easily ‘green screened’ CGI these days as it was only used for establishing external shots-the house managed to feature in one of the last ‘X Files’ eps of the original series…a good one too!
