Patrick Stewart returning to Star Trek

Updated: Brand new Star Trek series on the way with a favourite star returning.

Veteran actor Patrick Stewart has announced his return to the Star Trek franchise, with a new Star Trek series for CBS All Access.

Streaming service CBS All Access already successfully revived Star Trek: Discovery, which airs in Australia on Netflix.

Stewart, 78, played Captain Picard on Star Trek: The Next Generation from 1987 to 1994 and four feature films, last seen in 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis.

He made the announcement at the Las Vegas Star Trek Convention.

“It is an unexpected but delightful surprise to find myself excited and invigorated to be returning to Jean-Luc Picard and to explore new dimensions within him,” Stewart said on social media.

“During these past years, it has been humbling to hear stories about how The Next Generation brought people comfort, saw them through difficult periods in their lives or how the example of Jean-Luc inspired so many to follow in his footsteps, pursuing science, exploration and leadership.

“I feel I’m ready to return to him for the same reason — to research and experience what comforting and reforming light he might shine on these often very dark times.

“I look forward to working with our brilliant creative team as we endeavour to bring a fresh, unexpected and pertinent story to life once more.”

Onstage at the Las Vegas event, Stewart told fans his character “may not be a captain anymore. He may be someone who has been changed by his experiences.”

“We have no scripts as yet,” he said. “We’re just talking talking storylines. It will be something very different but it will come to you with the same passion.”

Having purchased Network TEN, CBS plans to launch CBS All Access in Australia but a date is yet to be confirmed, along with whether it impacts Tenplay.

  3. Anyone who watched Chaos on the Bridge on Netflix will get some idea of Patrick Stewart’s past experience with the franchise so it’s curious why he would want to return to it unless he is a producer and director. I wonder if Mr Frakes will also be acting and directing.

    1. Yep I thought that there would have been a better chance of Stewart doing a cameo on Seth MacFarlane’s The Orville than him venturing into the Trek world again, like a few other Trek alumni have (directing and appearing in). However there you go, it appears 4 years since that doco was first released is a long time in Hollywood and as for Jonathan Frakes he likely will put his hand up and I must say he did direct one of the better episodes of The Orville (with Charlize Theron in).

  5. Well, I would watch Patrick in just about anything but it’s a huge bonus for him to again be playing Jean-Luc in another Star Trek series..looking forward to this.
