Report: The Durrells to end in 2019

Updated: ITV confirms just one more season to come.

UK period drama The Durrells is set to end with its fourth series next year, according to reports.

Shooting on season four is due to take place in September.

The show, written by Simon Nye, is based on three books by Gerald Durrell recounting his family’s four years on the Greek Island.

But The Mirror reports the vast majority of the adventures in the books have been told.

Keely Hawes, who plays mum Louisa Durrell, in demand whilst Josh O’Connor who plays eldest son Larry will portray Prince Charles in seasons 3 and 4 of The Crown.

A third season premieres in Australia tonight on BBC First.

An ITV spokesman declined to comment on the show’s future.

Update: Now confirmed.

Executive Producer Sally Woodward Gentle says: “We’re going back to Corfu for one last firefly fuelled adventure of love and mishap. It has been such an incredible journey following this warm and enchanting family come of age, but their adventures on the island have reached a natural conclusion. I can’t think about it without crying though…”
Actor and Executive Producer, Keeley Hawes added: “I’m delighted to be heading back to Corfu for a final series of The Durrells. It’s been such a wonderful series to work on and I’m so pleased that viewers have taken the family to their hearts as much as we have. I have no doubt that the brilliant Simon Nye will give the family a fitting and fabulous farewell.”

  1. This was an unexpected gem for me, as I had never heard of the books. Can’t believe I loved a show with so many uncontrolled animals in it! But, I agree, the story has a defined time limit and four seasons is just about right.

  2. I might add that the House used in the series has no connection with the Durrell’s and is near Corfu town, however it makes a perfect location for the series. They lived in several houses, but collectively called the White House, about 40 mins from Corfu town, their home

  3. There have been several adaptations of these stories made, this is the longest running and has been consistently good, but it started to feel like it was stretching things a bit thin, so this is not a surprise. I’m glad it’s going out on a proper conclusion.

  4. Well I suppose all good things come to an end, but so glad to see it is on BBC First and not so rudely interrupted by commercials on ch.7. A big fan of the Durrell’s and have visited several of the TV locations on Corfu, a magical island.
