Ruby Rose to star as Batwoman

Gay Batwoman character coming to Arrow universe, set to have her own series in 2019.

Aussie Ruby Rose has been cast as Batwoman for The CW network.

The character, described as “an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter” will make her first appearance in an Arrow universe crossover event later this year under producer Greg Berlanti, but is also in development to front a standalone series in 2019.

Batwoman would follow the adventures of Kate Kane, to be scripted by openly gay writer Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries). A description follows….

Kate is fully aware of how bad-ass she is whenever she enters a room, even though she prefers to put a smile on your face. Young Ms. Kane is physically and intellectually confident while being a woman who is proud to be openly gay. However, Kate still deals with her inner demons that go back to her history with her dad. Their relationship is quite complicated as she struggles to get praise from him. She once aspired to have a successful military career, but those dreams sadly came to an end as she was kicked out of West Point once she came out of the closet. But that didn’t stop her from becoming the crime-fighting vigilante known as Batwoman. Striking fear into the criminals she fights, Kate is someone who must also fight the complications of living a double life, both as a citizen and hero of Gotham. While she has her shield up when fighting criminals, she lets herself be vulnerable when dating women.

    1. “Revisionist”?

I mean, I don’t do comics – but even I know the character was originally created in the 50’s to basically be Batman’s beard (because some psychiatrist had written a book about comics causing moral decay which suggested Batman was homosexual), and when she was re-introduced into the canon in the 00’s she was openly gay.

(Or do you mean the existance of Batwoman herself is “revisionist” – since DC’s comic rebooting mess in the 80’s re-wrote things so those minor characters had never existed in the first place?)

  1. Surely there is another gay actress in Hollywood who can actually act that could play Batwoman & that this might rule her out of the rumoured movie version of Batwoman as they tend to cast different people in the movies.

  2. Batwoman sounds like a trendy publicity stunt by the Arrowverse producers who are ambitious to make plenty of spin-offs if nothing else. It’s their money but average audiences don’t all want to know the sexual preferences of their favourite superheroes and just want some escapist entertainment.

    1. The reimaginings are delving into all kinds of character areas and certainly the genre has been growing up in Marvel and DC land. I suspect if a studio offered plot driven Batman or Superman as before viewers would comment. Ultimately they will connect or switch off to new ideas.
