Sequel ordered for The Alienist

US period is getting a sequel. Just don't call it a second season.

US period drama The Alienist has spawned a sequel, to feature the same principal actors Daniel Brühl, Luke Evans, and Dakota Fanning.

The Alienist, which screens in Australia through Netflix, was a limited series for TNT based on a novel by Caleb Carr.

TNT has now ordered The Angel of Darkness, also based on a Caleb Carr novel.

“We could not be prouder of The Alienist’s outstanding, award-worthy performance and all of the work the incredible actors and crew put in to bring that story and time period to life,” said Sarah Aubrey, executive vice president of original programming for TNT.

“Our audience fell in love with these multi-dimensional, timeless characters and the journey of their struggles living in complicated times. With this new story in TNT’s Suspense Collection, we will further immerse viewers into their world as they are confronted with a new enemy.”

Meanwhile there’s some consternation in US media about whether this qualifies as a second season and how it will impact awards categories.

  1. Curious remark about whether this show qualifies as a second season, if it has the same actors playing the same characters then it does, if alternatively the show, which does have a new title, has different actors (like True Detective) it should be regarded as a new show. The Alienist was one of the better quality shows shown on Netflix this year.
