Steven Moffat to pen new HBO drama The Time Traveler’s Wife

Former Doctor Who writer sticks with time travellers in a new love story adventure.

UK screenwriter and showrunner Steven Moffat is shifting from time travellers to their partners, penning a new drama for HBO The Time Traveller’s Wife.

The series is based on Audrey Niffenegger’s novel The Time Traveler’s Wife, a love story about a man with a genetic disorder that causes him to time travel unpredictably, and his artist wife, who has to cope with his frequent absences and dangerous experiences.

It was previously a 2009 feature with Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams. Moffat, best known for Doctor Who and Sherlock, will adapt and executive produce alongside Sue Vertue and Brian Minchin.

“I read Audrey Niffenegger’s The Time Traveler’s Wife many years ago, and I fell in love with it,” Moffat said. “In fact, I wrote a Doctor Who episode called ‘The Girl in the Fireplace’ as a direct response to it. When, in her next novel, Audrey had a character watching that very episode, I realised she was probably on to me. All these years later, the chance to adapt the novel itself, is a dream come true. The brave new world of long-form television is now ready for this kind of depth and complexity. It’s a story of happy ever after — but not necessarily in that order.”

“We are thrilled to be partnering with Steven Moffat, Hartswood and WBTV on The Time Traveler’s Wife,” HBO programming president Casey Bloys said. “Steven’s passion is evident in every project he’s written and we are certain that his love and respect for this mesmerizing and textured novel will make it a quintessential HBO series.”

“HBO is the perfect home to tell this incredible story with all the scale and space it needs, and we’re delighted to be working with Warner Bros. to bring Steven’s thrilling vision of the novel to life,” Hartswood Films said in a statement.

  1. This should be good. The movie was well cast but in the time alloted just couldn’t do the book justice. Moffatt is really about the best match for this project you could think of. His creation of the magnificent River Song and the lovely Mdm Pompadour episode show he will be great.

  2. The movie wasn’t much good despite having the wonderful Rachel McAdams in it. I am told that the book was much better. I hope the series is closer to the book than the movie.
