The Big Bang Theory confirms final season

"We aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring TBBT to an epic creative close.”

The upcoming 12th season of The Big Bang Theory will be the last, it has now been confirmed.

In a joint statement, Warner Bros. Television, CBS and Chuck Lorre Productions said, “We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past twelve seasons. We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close.”

CBS Entertainment head Kelly Kahl said, “The Big Bang Theory has been the defining comedy of its generation. All of us at the Network take exceptional pride in this series that uniquely combines creative genius, commercial ratings success, cultural influence and characters who became so popular, they are easily known by just one name. We’re incredibly grateful for our partnership with Warner Bros., Chuck Lorre Productions and a brilliant cast and crew that has made such a ‘big bang’ and lasting legacy on the television landscape.”

Variety reports the decision not to pursue additional seasons came down largely to timing. Warner Bros. contracts with CBS and with the cast members Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Kunal Nayyar and Simon Helberg all expired with reluctance to undertake new negotiations. All five had previously taken mega pay cuts to benefit Melissa Rauch and Mayim Bialik.

In Australia the show has been a ratings bonanza for Nine, and been at the centre of an odd rerun tussle with Seven.

  1. This show has always walked a line between the incredibly funny science-based comedy, and the doubtful romantic storylines. The first seasons were exceptional because they focused on the science, with a hint of romance, but after that the balance went out. After that, it was a bit of a gamble with each episode, to know whether you would get hilarious plotline, or just bed-hopping. Still most episodes were funnier than most other things on TV.

  2. imho it should have finished after season 9. With the exception of a handful of episodes (eg the Bitcoin Entanglement) the last 2 seasons have been painfully unfunny & unclever in comparison to earlier seasons, i could not even force myself to watch past s11e10. Probably suffers from its own success a bit like ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’, the earlier seasons were so good that the latter ones just could not compare.

  3. I think it would be a wise move from Nine if they screened the final episodes soon after airing in the U.S., regardless if it’s Summer here in Australia. When the final season is then shipped to GO they will pick up additional numbers. Like “Friends” I expect The Big Bang Theory to be on permanent rotation on GO.

  4. I love this show, time has flown since it started and I’ve always felt like it was fresh. I’ve managed to avoid most of the reruns, although it was on while I was doing the dishes last night and I gotta say, if I didn’t have recorded shows to watch I would’ve happily watched all night, as it seemed to be on all night. when I finished my recoreded programs it was still TBBT.

  5. Can’t go on for too much longer Jim Parsons is 45 (What’s his secret to looking so young lol), Galecki is 43 , and they are playing people in their late 20’s ? If it went for longer you would have actors nudging 50 playing 20 something year olds lol. Kunal and Simon are younger though.

Weirdly only Kaley Cuoco seems to look like she has “aged”

    1. They were meant to be in their late 20s when it started-they have aged if not always become more adult in their likes and behaviour-it’s not the Simpsons!

    2. Viewers of the show would have noted that the characters have recognised how much they have aged. They recently have had Leonard referring to himself as man in late thirties and Penny wondering how she got to be in her her early thirties.

  6. They were 10% pay cuts. When you are getting paid $43.2m for the final two season (after having been paid for 10 previously) you can afford to be generous to your friends. When those negotiations were done, it looked like they would be for the final seasons. Especially now Young Sheldon was a success at only a fraction of the price. It is the longest running multi camera sitcom.

      1. Two and half men has aired 262 episodes and TBBT as of May 10, 2018, has aired 255 episodes concluding the eleventh season with the 12th season another 24 episodes will air taking the total to 279.

          1. Unlike the Friends Finale which Nine sat on for 6 months before allowing Australian audiences to see it.
