Vale: Stefan Karl Stefansson

Icelandic performer, best known for kid's show LazyTown, has died.

Icelandic performer Stefan Karl Stefansson, best known for kid’s show LazyTown, has died aged 43.

He died after battling aggressive bile duct cancer for two years, according to family.

Stefansson played Robbie Rotten in 62 episodes of LazyTown between 2002 and 2014, which aired in Australia on ABC2 and Nickelodeon.

The show followed the exploits of bumbling Mayor Milford Meanswell and his niece Stephanie as they tried to encourage other characters to play outside. Robbie Rotten, however, was always against the plan. LazyTown song “We Are Number One” has enjoyed pop culture status and cover versions, with a petition for Stefansson to represent Iceland in the Eurovision Song Contest.

Fans have posted tributes to Stefansson, in both Icelandic and English.
