WIN News shifting Tasmanian bulletin to NSW base

Tasmanian bulletin to move from Hobart to Wollongong, job losses expected.

WIN News will cease to broadcast its Tasmanian bulletin from Hobart and centralise it from its Wollongong headquarters from August 17.

At a meeting on Tuesday night, staff were informed journalists in Tasmania would supply content which would be fronted by staff in New South Wales. The Examiner notes some staff were told by management, others found out via social media.

WIN News Tasmania management told the told the ABC that no journalists or camera crew will lose their jobs. But other positions are expected to be cut.

Mark Thomas, president of the Tasmanian branch of the Media, Entertainment and Arts Alliance,  said, “Sadly, it’s the end of a great television era in Tasmania in terms of WIN Television and formerly Tas TV which produced 60 years of television. They were the first television network to go live to air in Tasmania”

The statewide WIN News Tasmania is presented by Lucy Breaden from TVT’s studios in Hobart.

“It’s very sad for the Tasmanian media environment and it’s very sad for Tasmanians,” he added.

Staff at WIN News declined to comment.

  1. I’m surprised it’s taken them this long to shift presentation to Wollongong. The Hobart newsroom has somehow been able to hang on to a few quality journos let’s hope they stick around.

    1. “no journalists or camera crew will lose their jobs”. It will be like Canberra, Bendigo, etc., etc. The presenter will record on-camera bits which will be assembled into the final edit at Wollongong with content sent from Hobart. They will still use the leased ABC facility in Hobart. They just can’t justify studio personnel and presenters for one half-hour bulletin. The sardines at Wollongong had better go on a diet again.
