Fukushima govt unhappy over Netflix doco

District govt not happy after NZ filmmaker visits areas affected by Fukushima nuclear meltdown.

Netflix’s documentary series Dark Tourist has caused some angst Japan after New Zealand journalist David Farrier led a bus tour through areas affected by the 2011 meltdown of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Plant.

Farrier and the other tourists become concerned as the readings on their Geiger counters showed radiation higher than they were told to expect and what is deemed to be safe levels. The group eventually decides to cut the tour short, but not before eating at a restaurant in the area and Farrier leaving the group to enter an off-limit gaming arcade.

But now Japan’s Reconstruction Agency and Fukushima Prefectural Government are considering legal action and are examining the footage.

Almost 100,000 foreign tourists are estimated to have visited Fukushima last year on what have been dubbed nuclear tourism tours.

The series is Netflix’s first New Zealand series and also sees Farrier in Latin America, the United States, Europe, Africa, Southeast Asia and former Soviet republics.

  1. Great show. I honestly think that if you’re the kind of person that is going to go visit Fukushima anytime in the near future. This show will not discourage you.

  2. I really like Farrier’s style and this is a great show. Also recommended is his docco Tickled which looks at the sport of ‘Competitive Endurance Tickling’ and the organisation behind it which almost made the Scientologists look sane. Almost.
