Lawsuit looming over Who is America?

Humiliated by Sacha Baron Cohen, a satire interview participant fails to see the funny side.

A former Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore who featured in Who Is America? says he will sue Sacha Baron Cohen, CBS and Showtime for $95 million -but Showtime is yet to receive any paperwork.

Moore alleges that he was lured on the pretence of accepting an award for his support for Israel. Instead, he found himself being interviewed by Cohen as “Col. Erran Morad,”. When Cohen waved a “pedophile detector” at Moore it beeped, at which point Moore ended the interview.

“This false and fraudulent portrayal and mocking of Judge Moore as a sex offender, on national and international television, which was widely broadcast in this district on national television and worldwide, has severely harmed Judge Moore’s reputation and caused him, Mrs. Moore, and his entire family severe emotional distress, as well as caused and will cause Plaintiffs financial damage,” the lawsuit states.

But as Variety notes Moore signed a release before the taping took place which More will allege was obtained on fraudulent grounds.

A Showtime statement said: “The press has been sent copies of an alleged complaint, yet to our knowledge Showtime has not been served. With that said, we do not comment on pending litigation.”

Who Is America? screens in Australia on Stan.

  1. I absolutely loved this show and frankly, think Roy Moore was treated with as much respect as he deserves. Baron-Cohen has clearly studied Chris Morris’ (The Day Today; BrassEye) rulebook and written whole new chapters brilliantly.
