Marngrook returning to Thursdays in 2019

Grant Hansen says it was just too difficult to get anyone to watch footy shows on Wednesdays.

NITV’s Marngrook Footy Show is heading back to Thursday nights in 2019 with creator and host Grant Hansen describing Wednesday nights as a failed experiment.

“It was an experiment and I was very loath to let it happen. I have ended up being proven right because our ratings have suffered dramatically this year,” he told the Herald Sun.

“It is very difficult to get anyone to watch footy shows on Wednesday nights.”

The show switched to Wednesdays for its 2018 season when Thursdays became crowded, but dropped to as low as 5,000 viewers in Melbourne. Hansen says he warned SBS about the repercussions.

Comedic elements -used in place of a lack of team line-ups- were also unpopular with fans preferring straight football talk.

Next year the show will return to 7:30pm Thursdays, avoiding a direct clash with either The Front Bar or The Footy Show -this week the latter is airing on a Tuesday.

“We definitely need to get back to Thursday nights because they are the traditional football nights with the footy fans. Marngrook needs to get back into that space and be a major player again.”

  1. Wednesday night was always going to be a disaster, football shows are based around the teams. Once you remove that from the equation you are left with a lot of air time to fill. And it should be on the main sbs channel.

  2. Great show, great to hear. Though 5k viewers is beyond diabolical to see, so I do wonder if there’s any point still running the show in an already crowded space. Sorry if this comment seems counter intuitive
