Music guru Ian “Molly” Meldrum has been immortalised (if he wasn’t already) with a bronze statue of his own, unveiled in his local Richmond suburb today.
The statue by artist Louis Lauman in Wangaratta Street Park was unveiled by Meldrum today, who told onlookers, he would only accept the honour if he could have his beloved pet dog Ziggy “in my arms when I do this”.
Mushroom Music founder Michael Gudinski said of the former Countdown host, “You’ve encapsulated yourself in Australian culture”, while Eddie McGuire added, “We salute you today my friend and what an honour it is.” Nine veteran Pete Smith was also in attendance.

Aw good on Molly, he deserves a statue. And how cute they included his dog.
Congratulations Molly. If anybody deserves a statue in this country, it’s you.
Thank you for all you have done for music in Australia.
Good onya Molly
