Renewed: Outback Opal Hunters, Aussie Gold Hunters.

Good news as Discovery renews two local factual series.

Discovery Channel has renewed Aussie Gold Hunters and Outback Opal Hunters renewed for a fourth and second season respectively.

Both will return with 13 new episodes in the first half of 2019.

“We are excited to be continuing our investment in local programming with the return of these two fantastic titles,” said Jonathan Rudd, Vice President Factual and Sports Products. “Aussie Gold Hunters continues to grow each season, finding new audiences and breaking records for the channel. We couldn’t be more thrilled with its success. Season 1 of Outback Opal Hunters was a breakout hit for us and we can’t wait to see what the new season has in store as we increase our offering to 13 episodes and add Western Australia to the mix.

“A core component of Discovery’s programming is showcasing extreme jobs and Australia is renowned for having some of the most dangerous and unique professions in the world – gold prospecting and opal mining are no exception. There’s a huge appetite for these stories and characters, not just in Australia but internationally too, as their success in overseas markets demonstrates.”

Aussie Gold Hunters (Electric Pictures) follows crews of gold-hungry prospectors as they set out to uncover a fortune on the goldfields of outback Western Australia. Season 3 unearthed more gold that ever before with over $1.3 million worth discovered.

Production on Season 4 is currently underway and will see the return of The Dirt Dogs led by Vern Strange, Gold Gypsies Christine and Greg Clark, The Mahoneys (Ted, Lecky and daughter Tyler), and rookie team The Scrappers fronted by British gold hunter Alex Stead. This season will also welcome some new faces and a new location as Discovery heads to the iconic goldfields of Victoria; a landscape rich in Australia’s gold rush history. The franchise has aired in over 33 countries and territories since it launched including the UK, Germany, Spain and Italy.

Outback Opal Hunters (Prospero Productions) delves into Australia’s opal mining industry, which accounts for over 90% of the world’s opal. Following hardcore crews in Lightning Ridge (NSW), Opalton (QLD), and opal mecca, Coober Pedy (SA), the series takes viewers to the forefront of this unique industry to reveal what has people hooked on the hunt for the Queen of Gems.

Returning this season will be The Rookies, Justin Lang and Daniel Becker, The Opal Queen, Kelly Tishler, Col’s Crew, led by veteran Col Duff, as well as brothers, Peter and Mick Cooke. Season 2, also currently in production, will see a new crew join the lineup and a new location, with filming expanding to Western Australia. Outback Opal Hunters has aired in over 20 countries and territories including the UK and Germany.
