Stan picks up UK comedy The Bisexual

Six part series to centre around a New Yorker dating both men & women for the first time, in London.

Stan has picked up new UK comedy drama The Bisexual, written, directed and starring Iranian-American filmmaker Desiree Akhavan.

The six part series, commissioned by UK’s Channel 4, explores the differences between dating men and women from the perspective of a New Yorker who finds herself – for the first time – doing both in London.

Maxine Peake (Silk, Black Mirror) and Brian Gleeson (Hellboy, Phantom Thread, Stonemouth) star alongside Akhavan in her first television project.

It also features stars Eva Birthistle (The Last Kingdom, Brooklyn), John Dagleish (Justice League, Sunny Afternoon, The Monuments Men), Naomi Ackie (Lady Macbeth, Yardie, Star Wars: Episode 9), Niamh Algar (The Virtues) and newcomers Saskia Chana and Michelle Guillot.

Desiree Akhavan won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance for The Miseducation of Cameron Post.

Nick Forward, Stan Chief Content Officer said “Desiree Akhavan is an extraordinary talent, and her unique take on the complications of modern dating is incredibly timely. We’re looking forward to bringing The Bisexual to audiences at the same time as its worldwide premiere.”

It will screen later this year.

Distributed by all3media international, Akhavan (Appropriate Behaviour) co-writes (with Cecilia Frugiuele), directs and stars in The Bisexual, a comedy-drama which offers a raw, funny, unapologetic take on bisexuality and the comic misconceptions surrounding it. The series takes a candid look at people’s approach to love and sex, and what the love and sex they’re drawn to reveals about them.

The Bisexual, currently in post-production, will premiere exclusively on Stan later this year and is produced by Hootenanny for Hulu in the USA and Channel 4 in the UK.
