Unhappy feet: TEN’s Sunday fail

Ratings: The Block dominates Sunday as TEN falls behind SBS from 7:30pm.

What was TEN thinking?

From 7:30pm last night the network fell below SBS with a 2006 movie that drew a dismal 140,000 viewers. Even SBS repeats on Rome and Easter Island managed higher than that. Two weeks ago it oddly wrapped up All Aussie Adventures with a double episode, leaving nothing to replace it.

The Block easily led proceedings with 1.26m viewers followed by ABC News, Sunday Night, and Joanna Lumley’s Silk Road (from 7:40pm).

From around 8:30pm Nine remained in front with 60 Minutes on 715,000, ahead of The Story of the Royals on 493,000 (from 8pm). Rake followed at 432,000.

Overall, TEN barely scraped past the 400,000 mark last night with a Serena Williams interview on The Sunday Project. Rome’s Invisible City was highest for SBS.

Nine network won Sunday with 34.1% then Seven 30.3%, ABC 17.7%, TEN 10.9% and SBS 6.8%.

The Block was #1 for Nine with 1.26m then Nine News (937,000), 60 Minutes (715,000) and City of Evil (364,000).

Seven News (1.02m) was best for Seven then Sunday Night (696,000), The Story of the Royals (493,000) and Crime Investigation Australia (195,000).

ABC News (705,000), Joanna Lumley’s Silk Road (576,000), Rake (432,000), and Vera (268,000) comprised ABC’s night.

The Sunday Project (404,000 / 209,000) was the best TEN could muster then TEN Eyewitness News (278,000), Bondi Rescue (197,000), movie: Happy Feet (140,000) and When Corden Met Paul McCartney (87,000).

On SBS it was Rome’s Invisible City (180,000), Easter Island: The Truth Revealed (148,000) and SBS World News (144,000),.

7TWO’s Border Security (part of a 12 episode marathon) was indeed the top ranking multichannel show at 177,000.

  3. I was on ABC most of the night…enjoying Vera….even in repeat…and will watch again on iview…as I had a few interruptions…thank you ABC for putting it on iview…Love iview…??

  4. I was shocked to see Happy Feet advertised for last night. Surely there is a David Attenborough documentary which they haven’t played yet which could have been aired. They could even do a really cheap Bachelor\Bachellorette ‘Where are they now” show with cast from earlier seasons telling what they are up to now relationship wise. Sure I wouldn’t watch, but it might attract the regular Batch audience.

  5. I am surprised Ten does not have any new content on a Sunday night during ratings season. That really is a case of abandoning any attempt at getting good ratings. Even a more newish movie might have been preferable.

    Really disappointed in The Project last night with the Serena Williams interview where they failed utterly to ask her any of the hard questions.

  7. Bit disappointed in the Serena interview. The promo was quite misleading – suggesting that either the question was a tough one, which she may not answer, or that the response might be worthy of the cliffhanger. Neither was the case. I felt that Lisa talked more about the US open than Serena did.

  10. We were watching the Sunday Project and when it ended and suddenly Happy Feet started we just laughed and changed the channel. I’m totally confused as to what Ten was thinking

  11. I’m surprised 10 didn’t screen Survivor last night instead of tonight due to the Brownlow medal. They could’ve also screened HYBPA as well. Then tonight they could’ve screened a catch up Survivor with some never before seen footage and a best of HYBPA.

        1. Some of us in NSW know and care, but we are less likely to sit through the whole performance. Nothing wrong with that, it is a good show, but for the NSW audience there is less content that is relevant, and they are not steeped in the reading of the votes tradition, and find it a bit weird. More likely to just tune in at the end, or wait for the result on the news next day.

        2. Which is why it is on 7mate…? As it has been for at least 7 years now. Not sure of your comment.

          As a side note, 40k or more would be on par with a good performing multi-channel program or an AFL match in such market, so wouldn’t hurt 7mate’s share.

          1. “a good performing multi-channel program” is 7TWO’s Border Security at 177,000. Saturday’s AFL got 60,000 in Sydney.

    2. But I think airing Survivor on Sunday hurts Survivor in the long run. The last two years (when Survivor did run on most Sundays), the Sunday eps of Survivor were the weakest of the 3 nights that it aired on.

      The short term solution is to air

      The long term solution to strengthen the “Aus Survivor” franchise is to keep a constraint schedule and keep it on Monday/Tuseday and to find some show to fill that Sunday schedule hole for next year.
