Veteran British actor, best known for Lovejoy, has died.

Veteran British actor Dudley Sutton, best known for Lovejoy, has died aged 85.

He died on Saturday in a London hospice surrounded by family following a battle with cancer.

Sutton played Tinker Dill, a tout who was friends with Ian McShane’s antiques dealer in Lovejoy, which ran for 71 episodes from 1986 to 1994.

He enjoyed a long run in British film and television including Casualty, Emmerdale, Holby City, Doctors, Father Brown, Skins, Wallendar, The Bill, The Famous Five, Noble House, Bergerac, Widows, George & Mildred, Porridge, Thriller, Tales of the Unexpected, Softly Softly, The Sweeney, Z Cars, Doctor in the House, The Avengers, The Saint and Coronation Street.

Film credits include The Football Factory, The Devils, The Stud, The Pink Panther Strikes Again, The Big Sleep, The Island, Brimstone & Treacle, Orlando, Incognito and Tin.

Sutton continued working in recent times, with three films yet to be released.

  1. Sad news, a great actor.
    I have fond memories of enjoying Lovejoy with my parents as a teen, so was happy when it came to 72 and I could rewatch the whole series. It was fun seeing all the guest stars, both established and up-and-coming. I think it was also the first time I’d seen a character speak and look directly to camera.
