Axed: Luke Cage

A surprise ending for action series starring Mike Colter, after just two seasons.

Netflix action series Luke Cage, starring Mike Colter, has been axed after two seasons.

“Unfortunately, Marvel’s Luke Cage will not return for a third season,” Marvel and Netflix saidin a joint statement. “Everyone at Marvel Television and Netflix is grateful to the dedicated showrunner, writers, cast and crew who brought Harlem’s Hero to life for the past two seasons, and to all the fans who have supported the series.”

The end comes less than a week after Netflix confirmed Iron Fist would not continue.

Deadline suggests the end was due to both “creative differences” and the inability for the parties involved to reach a deal on how to move forward.

Meanwhile Daredevil launched its third season on Friday.

  1. Some of the most compelling female characters on television come from Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Announcing this news after the new series of Daredevil dropped on Friday was bittersweet. This season of DD is stellar (welcome back Vincent D’onofrio!) and Iron Fist Season two is an improvement on the weakest hero in the franchise with the inclusion of Misty Knight along with Colleen Wing, who deserve their own show. But its all probably down to the Disney acquisition. If they cancel Jessica Jones too I’ll probably cry.

  2. A bit of speculation out there that these Marvel cancellations are the result of Disney’s pending Hulu control and launch of a Disney SVOD with Disney previously reporting they were intending on taking back all rights and distributing to their own services. However, given these were Netflix productions licensed before all this happened not sure how true it necessarily is. Either way, very disappointed in this news as I really loved Luke Cage. I think Netflix might be in a bit of trouble if this trend continues.

  3. The conclusion is that the arrangement between Netflix and Disney is a factor here as Disney is looking to regain the Marvel franchise for its own streaming business after the original Marvel deal for Netflix to cancel or renew Marvel shows had concluded after The Defenders, it is now up to both Netflix and Disney to deal for each season of a show. Reading between the lines time is running out for Marvel to be seen on Netflix, what the future will be for the better shows like Marvels Daredevil to be seen on Disney is anyone’s guess.

  4. Wow this is ridiculous. Bushmaster was a great villain in season two. This was a great series. Netflix have lost the plot! From the way they’re going they’ll cancel all their Marvel series and I won’t watch any of their series after that.

    1. I think this and IF are due to the shows bring very expensive for Netflix to make compared to the revenue gained and Disney creating its own streaming service. Netflix needs to move its eggs somewhere else before Disney grabs all the Marvel character rights for itself. Netflix recently bought the rights to properties like Kick-Ass and Witcher so it probably makes more business sense to put their money into non-Marvel genre stuff.
