Bachelor tested Nick Cummins’ mental health

Stress & pressure on the sports field was nothing compared to reality TV, says ex-Bachelor star.

Nick “Honey Badger” Cummins says he was battling with emotions and mental health in the lead-up to The Bachelor finale.

Addressing the show’s controversial ending in a pre-recorded interview he gave a heartfelt speech on The Project last night.

“I’ve never been in a mental space as low as I have been on that show, especially towards the end of it,” he said.

“I’ve had injuries, I’ve been in a wheelchair, all that stuff doesn’t compare to what you actually have to go through on something like that.”

Cummins said he knew during the “home town” visits that he was struggling to connect enough with the Bachelor girls to choose one. But he also hadn’t made up his mind whether to pick someone or reject the format.

“I thought, ‘I can avoid a whole lot of drama, for me for the girls, and just pick someone’. Or I could just be honest.

He added, “She’d be sitting here now. People would be asking if you’re in love? And it’s like, I didn’t want to lie.

“It’s not fair to her. Going down that path three months, only to break her heart.”

Denying his charity walk on the Kokoda trail in Papua New Guinea was to escape media, he said he thought there would be more understanding.

“It’s been sensationalised and really exaggerated. But I understand people are really invested in something like this, maybe there’s some sort of emotion they want to get out of it,” he said.

“You go in there, I’ve got a chance at finding the girl for me here then all of a sudden you’re sending girls home,” he said.

“I’m not a rude bloke, I feel I’m pretty honest and fair. Every time a girl was sent home at least one would come up and say, ‘Are you okay?’ I wasn’t. It’s terrible sending someone home when you don’t actually know them that well and they could be the one. You’re sending a nice girl home in tears. It’s tough.”

But he gave a direct message to the finalists, saying, “Brittany and Sophie, you know I care for you and I said this so many times throughout the show.”
