Hayden & Sara win The Block 2018

A reality TV win and a baby on the way for The Block's most volatile couple.

Rank outsiders Hayden Vale and Sara Tumino have won The Block 2018 after a tense auction in which all 5 apartments at The Gatwick were sold.

The couple, who provided the Nine series with plenty of histrionics, saw Apartment 3 sell for a whopping $3,020,000 – $545,000 over their reserve. The sale topped both Gatwick penthouses. With a further series prize of $100,000 their total grew to $645,000.

It was celebrations all round as they announced they were expecting their second child, oddly allowing producers to reveal the gender to them in a TV twist -a baby boy is due in April.

The auction had plenty of tense moments when two of the apartments got off to sluggish auctions but defied Melbourne property trends to ensure all five were sold. The hefty pricetags for the new owners and contestant winnings are in stark contrast to the impoverished lives of the site’s former residents.

Hayden & Sara Apt 3:
Sold: $3.020m
Reserve: $2.475m
Profit: $545,000 (+ $100,000 prize)

Kerrie & Spence Apt 1:

Reserve: $2.435m
Profit: $415,000

Hans & Courtney Apt 2:

Bianca & Carla Apt 5:

Norm & Jess Apt 4:

Former Gatwick owners, sisters Yvette Kelly and Rose Banks, who sold their family property to Nine for around $10m made a surprise purchase of Courtney and Hans’ apartment, the last to go under the hammer.

The finale wraps a successful 14th season under producers Julian Cress & Justin Sturzacker, delivering solid ratings for Nine once more.

The Block continues to be one of TV’s greatest success stories, and this season has been no exception, with the program continuing to dominate in all areas”, said Nine Program Director, Hamish Turner.

“After 14 seasons, The Block regularly tops overnight rankings night after night. It continues to deliver across all platforms, with year on year increases on broadcast video on demand (BVOD).”

Nine has already confirmed a 15th series in 2019 at backpackers Oslo Hotel in St Kilda, just around the corner from The Gatwick.

  1. I am left wondering what actually made Hayden and Saras apartment so much better than the others in the end (surely it couldn’t just be the gold bathtub)? Most of the season the judges didn’t like anything they were doing and they battled on through all the arguments and potty mouthed outbursts. Happy they surprised everyone with the win though.

  2. Still can’t get over the girl from Gogglebox who thought Keith and Scotty were the same person… hilarious!

Didn’t watch the final, but good to see they all made some money.

  3. Over the editing, fake outcomes and over the top moments. They really need to look at different casting as the usual aussie battlers, villians, is getting predictable and old.

  4. Sorry, same script as previous years. Hold off the hammer till after a few commercial breaks. Say you’re out a couple of times only to find another big bag of money after another add. Go outside to make that tension building phone call (suddenly all micked up). You don’t fool us. Anyway, congrats to the winners.
