UK production follows the first year of World War II from multiple European perspectives.

Mad About You star Helen Hunt heads the ensemble cast of a newly-announced UK drama World On Fire.

The drama by Peter Bowker (The A Word, Occupation, Blackpool) is produced by ITV-owned Mammoth Studios for the BBC.

It is described as an adrenalised, emotionally gripping and resonant drama following the first year of World War II told through the intertwining fates of ordinary people drawn from Britain, Poland, France, Germany and the United States as they grapple with the effect of the war on their everyday lives.

The cast also includes and Lesley Manville (Mum), Jonah Hauer-King (Little Women, Howard’s End) and Julia Brown plus Zofia Wichłacz, Brian J. Smith,  Tomasz Kot, Bruno Alexander, Johannes Zeiler, Eugénie Derouand and Parker Sawyers (Pine Gap).

Filming begins this week in Prague and other filming locations include Manchester, London, Paris and Berlin.

  1. Helen Hunt is an interesting choice for a lead role in a UK production, especially a WW2 drama which have been a mixed bag in recent times with most wartime shows being civilian based like Foyles War, Land Girls, Home Front or Halcyon, only the alternative universe story SS GB showed any military grit, the story being almost totally fictional. Most producers want to play it safe as far as the Nazi regime is concerned, but any wartime show or movie will need a good budget and a good eye for historical detail to do it justice, so World on Fire is going to have plenty of WW2 history buff critics to fend off.
