Kung Fu reboot proceeding

Changes for the new-look Kung Fu include a modern day version, as a series is confirmed.

The reboot of Kung Fu is proceeding to series at FOX in the US, to be distributed by Warner Bros.

The new version to be produced by Greg Berlanti and will feature a female lead. This version will also be set in the present day, while the original plan was for this to be a period piece set in the 1950s.

Albert Kim (Sleepy Hollow, Nikita, Leverage, Dirt) has joined as the writer and executive producer, taking over for Wendy Mericle.

The revamped reboot is described as an action-driven procedural about a young Chinese-American woman who inherits her father’s kung fu studio, only to discover it’s actually a secret centre dedicated to helping members of the Chinatown community who have nowhere else to turn. With the help of a former star pupil–a smart and driven ex-Marine–she vows to continue the school’s mission, and in the process discovers things she never knew about her cultural background and family’s heritage, including a connection to a legendary ancestor.

The original series ran for 63 episodes from 1972 to 1975 with Carradine as an 1880s Shaolin monk, Kwai Chang Caine, who travels the American Old West armed only with his spiritual training and his skill in martial arts in search of his half-brother.

      1. Only saw a couple of eps of the reboot-don’t think 9 showed 4 seasons of it at the time-doing it as a contemporary production is far, far cheaper and easier than the old West and Imperial China!
