Naomi Watts joins Game of Thrones prequel

Naomi Watts has joined the prequel to Game of Thrones for HBO.

The exact details of Watts’ character are being kept under wraps, but she is playing “a charismatic socialite hiding a dark secret.”

Writer Jane Goldman co-created the project with author George R.R. Martin, and will also serve as showrunner.

According to Variety Goldman’s project takes place thousands of years before the events of Game of Thrones, and chronicles the world’s descent from the golden Age of Heroes into its darkest hour. Only one thing is for sure: from the horrifying secrets of Westeros’ history to the true origin of the white walkers, the mysteries of the East to the Starks of legend–it’s not the story we think we know.

The series is one of five Game of Thrones projects in development at HBO. The exact nature of the plot of each project has been kept under tight wraps but none of the current main cast of the series will be involved.

The final season of Game of Thrones will air in 2019 with a date yet to be announced.
