Networks serve up Queen specials

Nine and SBS to play Queen specials, but both have aired years before.

With Bohemian Rhapsody on the way in cinemas, networks are pulling out Queen music specials -but both aired on ABC2 years ago.

On Sunday Nine screens Queen: Days of Our Lives Pt. 1 at 9:30pm. This aired on ABC2 in 2011.

A two-part documentary about the iconic music band Queen. It features rare footage, interviews with the band and management, and clips from various concerts throughout the height of the band’s success.

SBS will also screen documentary, Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender which focusses more on Mercury’s solo projects. This previously screened on ABC2 in 2012.

Freddie Mercury was one of the most charismatic, complex, and fascinating characters in British rock music. The story of Queen is much told, but this new documentary focuses on Freddie and the solo projects he worked on, outside of the band.

Using extensive archive footage of interviews with Freddie as well as concerts, video shoots, and personal material – much of it previously unseen – along with new interviews with friends and colleagues, a picture emerges of a man who was very different to his flamboyant stage persona. This portrait reveals the man behind the superstar image, ‘The Great Pretender’.

Saturday, 3 November at 9.25pm on SBS
12.20am NT/12.35am WA/12.50am QLD / 1.20am SA

  1. I wouldn’t be surprised to also see a Rage special on Queen.
Here’s a diversion: which pop group was originally called “Smile” and what was “Brad’s Drink”, “Tokyo Tsushin Kogyo”, “BackRub” (Google it), “3000” (a movie), “Firebird” (too easy), “Six of One”, “Lenny, Penny and Kenny” (obvious)? (BoredPanda.com)

  2. The days of our lives doco which aired on abc2 and now channel 9 has the rights for is excellent- I gather nine will be showing it over consecutive sunday nights?
