Shane Gould wins Australian Survivor 2018

61 yr old sporting legend Shane Gould outwitted the competition and showed that age is no barrier to winning Survivor.

61 year old Olympic legend Shane Gould has won Australian Survivor: Champions vs. Contenders.

Gould claimed the title of sole survivor and the $500,000 prize defeating barrister Sharne Coombes -by a single vote.

The finale capped off a gripping season full of blindsides, scheming and gruelling challenges. Sharn won the final immunity challenge, perched high atop a floating post when former AFL player Brian unwittingly removed his cap after 2.15 hours. It was a move that would cost him his shot at half a million dollars.

Sharn took her alliance friend Shane to the last tribal challenge but hadn’t counted on the jury questioning her loyalty to former teammate Mat, whom she failed to warn about a blindside.

Gould’s endurance through 50 days unaided, and her manoeuvring through a fierce tribe was remarkable -and a win for senior Australians. In her own words, “Don’t f*** with Shane Gould.”

The TEN series has enjoyed consistent ratings and is currently casting for 2019.

  1. Absolutely love our version of Survivor. Of the final three (then two), I’m happy with Shane winning. Woulda been nice to have seen a Contender take it out but that’s the game! Also was really happy to have seen a ‘live’ (albeit pre-recorded) finale but it wasn’t pimped at all and I didn’t realise until the night that it was actually happening that way. Bring on season 4!

  2. Disappointing end to a great series – not so much because Shane won but because the final tribal and reunion all seemed to revolve around Mat and the edit seemed to be all about how Sharn had somehow been disloyal to Mat and stopped him from winning because she tried and failed to use her idol on him, even though he was too stupid at that point to realise he was in trouble and was so loyal himself had blindsided Sharn by voting out Lydia a few days earlier.

The edit seemed to be all Sgane at tribal council with only the topic of Mat being Sharns contribution.

  3. I was expecting sharn to win, her final pitch really let her down. the opener was too polished and pretentious, not endearing at all. She turned into a stuttering mess when brian asked a question that she should have had a good answer too. I wouldn’t want her as my lawyer. Dont know why Matt was so bitter about the way he was eliminated. he had an immunity idol in his pocket, his elimination was his own ego’s fault.

Hopefully this is the last year a strong player is brought to the final because of a “to be the best you have to beat the best” philosophy. Tara did it last year (she could have voted jericho out in top 4) and this year Sharn did it. Both times the jury did not respect it and the runner up dug their own grave. The game is called “survivor”, not “honourable sport”. Do what you need to do to win.

  4. Much was made of Sharne’s experience at addressing juries. I was very surprised that she became a stuttering mess when she was questioned. Shane spoke beautifully. I’m glad she won.

  5. Probably one of my favourite seasons to watch. Lots of game play and great challenges, without any real spitefulness, and lovely Aussie humour. Both finalists deserving of the win in my opinion.

So often, the older people are the first voted off – there is quite a lot of age discrimination in this show. It was to Shane’s credit that she survived that, along with many sneaky moves and manipulation of people.

  6. Yes, good job, Shane. So glad she won over Sharni.
Played a very crafty and subtle game – the wisdom and experience of age definitely helped, as well as her perceptiveness and ability to accurately sum up the other contestants and their motives.
Though, regrading the Jury’s focus on supposed loyalty and integrity, can’t believe that no-one brought up the fact that it was actually Shane who first plotted get rid of Matt !
Unlikeable as he was, I do think Brian deserved to be there in the final two as he played a mighty game. His lack of self awareness and perceptiveness let him down in the end though.

  7. I am very happy Shane won but I think Sharn should have won because she was the better player. All depends on what part of the game you want to choose as played I guess. Unfortunately she picked the wrong person to take to final 2. Sharn should have been reminding Matt over and over and over that she was going to play her idol to save him until Nachos Benji talked her out of it. She seemed to get tongue tied and stay silent. Result, boom goodbye Sharn.

  8. Congratulations to Shane (my favorite from the start – so happy she won). Sharn may have been confident talking to the jury, but I found she talked like a barrister, while Shane spoke from the heart.

  9. Excellent outcome! Go the Gould! Shane was such fun to watch, had the most enjoyable talking heads of the season, and what an endurance beast to last that long sleeping on bamboo, staying calm and crafty and goodhumoured all the way to the end.

  10. How hilarious was it that it was Brian’s wife who pointed out that he took his hand off the idol. Good on Shane. Well deserved but it was very close.

  11. what a great series, lots of blindsides, lots of people playing badly by making themselves a target, but our beautiful Shane did just enough to beat all those young ones. Good on her . Please channel 10, don’t put banner adds over the top of the speech captions. Terrific scenery, well filmed and a lovely deserving winner.

    1. yep I think I she is the oldest winner in any version of Survivor

btw David I don’t think it was Shane that instigated the blindside that you were referring to (Matt?) but rather to the one of Lydia…?

  12. I was also staggered that Sharn didn’t put more emphasis on how she initially tried to use her idol to save Matt. I felt she was a more deserving winner. However, it was still a fantastic series.
