A Taste of India pop-up channel

A mix of Indian-themed movies will screen across the weekend of December 1st & 2nd.

Foxtel Movies is feeling the Bollywood with a pop-up channel in December, A Taste of India.

It screens a mix of Indian themed movies, shot variously by Bollywood, US, UK filmmakers, back to back over a 48 hour period, Saturday 1 December – Sunday 2 December on Channel 404.

Basmati Blues (2017)
Linda Watt is a sheltered but brilliant young scientist who is plucked out of her company’s lab and sent to India by her CEO to sell Rice 9, a genetically modified rice she’s created unaware that the rice will destroy the Indian farmers she thinks she’s helping. She is introduced to an ambitious young bureaucrat, William who, along with his mother, decides that they are an excellent match. Linda then meets Rajit, a rebellious college student forced to drop out by lack of funds, who questions Linda’s motives. He ultimately opens her eyes to the fact she has unknowingly become part of a destructive plan.

Slumdog Millionaire (2018)
Jamal Malik is a young orphan from the slums of Mumbai who is one question away from the ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’ jackpot. Arrested on suspicion of cheating and desperate to prove his innocence, he tells the incredible story of his life: the chaos of the streets he and his brother grew up in; their wild adventures on the road and of vicious run-ins with local gangs; and Lakita, the girl he loved and lost. But what is a kid with no interest in money doing on the show and how is it he knows all the answers?

Bride & Prejudice (2004)
A Bollywood update of Jane Austen’s classic tale, where Mrs. Bennet is eager to find suitable husbands for her five unmarried daughters. When the rich single gentlemen Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy come to live nearby, the Bennets have high hopes, though circumstance and boorish opinions threaten to get in the way of romance.

The Lunchbox (2013)
Middle class housewife Ila is trying once again to add some spice to her marriage, this time through her cooking. She desperately hopes that this new recipe will finally arouse some kind of reaction from her neglectful husband. She prepares a special lunchbox to be delivered to him at work, but, unbeknownst to her, it is mistakenly delivered to another office worker, Saajan, a lonely man on the verge of retirement.. This begins a series of lunchbox notes between Saajan and Ila. They each discover a new sense of self and find an anchor to hold on to in the big city of Mumbai that so often crushes hopes and dreams.

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2011)
The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel follows a group of British retirees who decide to ‘outsource’ their retirement to less expensive and seemingly exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self. Though the new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past.

The Darjeeling Limited (2007)
Three estranged American brothers, a year after their father’s death, embark on a soul-searching journey across India on board the Darjeeling Limited train. Francis (whose face is completely bandaged due to a recent motorcycle accident), Peter and Jack haven’t spoken since the funeral and don’t get along very well. Francis reveals that their mother has entered a convent in India, and the real reason for the trip was to find her. Their “spiritual quest” veers rapidly off-course due to events involving over-the-counter pain killers, Indian cough syrup and pepper spray, and they eventually find themselves stranded alone in the middle of the desert.

Life of Pi (2012)
An epic adventure of magical realism, Life of Pi follows the story of a young man’s incredible survival at sea against almost impossible odds. While cast away he forms an amazing and unexpected connection with another survivor: a fearsome Bengal tiger.

A Passage to India (1984)
Tensions in British colonial India come to a boil, when news spreads of a liberal-minded englishwoman accusing a young Indian doctor of attacking her whilst sightseeing in some local caverns.

A beautiful single mother of one defies family pressure to find a nice Indian match but when she falls in love with an Australian man, it is not only scandalous, it’s UnIndian!

The Guru (2002)
A young Indian dance teacher named Ramu Gupta embarks for New York City in pursuit of fame and fortune only to find himself working as writer in an Indian restaurant. Through an encounter with Sharonna, a beautiful adult-film star, the shy, inexperienced Ramu is mistaken for a spiritual leader, the Guru of Sex and becomes an overnight celebrity. Fame comes at a price, however, and Ramu must choose between his newfound fame and his growing love for the beautiful Sharonna.
