Dexter revival?: “Never say never”

Michael C. Hall keeps his options open but still stands behind that finale...!

Will Dexter ever return to his wicked TV ways, and if so when?

That’s the question that was put to star Michael C. Hall in an interview with Daily Beast.

“Every time I’m asked about this I say, ‘never say never,’” Hall said, smiling. “The next thing I know there’s an announcement on the internet saying ‘he’s going to do it again.’ The way that show ended gave no sense of closure for people and a lot of questions unanswered. He seems to be in this self-imposed exile, he certainly didn’t ride off into the sunset. His sister died. It left a gnarly knot in some viewers’ stomachs. I stand by how that 8th season ended.”

Newsflash: while the star may stand behind that wretched finale, not many loyal fans did. Scour the web for worst TV finales, and it’s frequently #1.

For Hall, the tragedy of Dexter is that “if he had kept on killing people he’d have been fine, but he gets married, he opens his imagination and heart. He has a real connection to people, and all those people are compromised or destroyed in some way. For it to be all tidied up after that would have not been honest. For him to simulate his own death and extricate himself from the context of his life made sense to me. As far as any more of that happening, it’s possible.”

In terms of discussions around the series, Hall said, “There have been different possibilities that have come up. They haven’t felt worth doing. But there’s still something potentially there. But there are no immediate plans to do that.”

All together now, “I’m a lumberjack and I’m ok….”

  1. I enjoyed Dexter in seasons 1-5 and season 7. 8 was horrendous and that finale was indeed one of the worst in the history of TV finales. The only good thing about season 8 was Yvonne Strahovski’s character Hannah

  2. As much as I loved the show but hated the finale, I reckon any more would be (if you pardon the pun) overkill. I’d hate to see it go the way of Arrested Development which I now wish my fellow fans would let go once and for all.

  3. I would welcome a return purely for the chance to retcon that horrible final season.

I know a lot of friends were very critical of Dexter post Season 4 but I still really enjoyed it right up until Season 8 started.

Maybe it was watching Dexter Season 8 alongside Breaking Bad drawing toward its conclusion with one showing how to wrap a series up with perfection and the other demonstrated how to destroy it.

    1. And now the rumors are rife of a ‘BB’ film/mini series revival it doesn’t need-‘Dexter’ could only continue as a pretty standard serial killer type show as the central character now has none of the constraining/redemptive factors of family and friendship around him-this was hinted at in the very last scenes of the show.
